• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

DXTBMP Error

My DXTBMP program starting showing an error when loading a texture. This only started 2 or 3 days ago. When I load a texture an error box pops up 'Cannot open file C:\Users\Johnny\AppData\Local\Temp\xnorm.bmp. Also, when I sent the file to the paint program and then save it back, another message pops up - Cannot open file C:\Users\Johnny\AppData\Local\trans.bmp. But not every time. I have been using DXTBMP for years and no problems even with Windows 10 upgrades and updates. Tried uninstalling and the reinstalling, downloading a new file to install with, but nothing seems to help. Wondered if it is due to any new Windows update. I haven't seen any other comments lately related to that. Anyone with ideas would be appreciated. Also, no new programs have been installed. Also, I use Windows Defender for virus detection. But, been using it for ages and no conflicts. Wasn't sure this was the correct forum to post on. Thanks.

It certainly sounds like a Windows permissions issue, but a very odd one. Not sure what you can do about it...

'Cannot open file C:\Users\Johnny\AppData\Local\Temp\(...)
This. You should not be storing working files in the appdata\...\temp folders as the operating system will nuke them without telling you first. Move them to another folder e.g. c:\temp\dxt_files and try again.

Unfortunately those files are created by DXTBmp and the location cannot be changed. It uses the default Windows "Temp" folder.

This is an issue I have had exactly with the same OS and can trace it back to a antivirus/Spyhunter blocking or permissions issue. If I disable Spyhunter (Which is always running in the background) I have no issues then. It will also slow down the ability to load programs sometimes. So if I am painting or editing with GIMP/ DXTBmp I will just disable it.

Thanks for the input. Also contacted the developer and he thought it was probably a Windows thing. My drive has been a little flaky. So, I switched to another computer I had running the same software setup and made it my current system. Bought a new hard drive and will do a complete new install on that one. Everything works normally on the system I am using now. I am using the same Windows Defender setup and location of all my files. I think it is a drive forgetting where it put stuff!
