• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Error Message in ADE9X

Can anybody help? It seems I have ADE9X installed ok but after I edit an airport in FSX I get an error message when I try to compile it to a bgl file. Top line of the message says : Could not find file "C:\Program Files(86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator \KILM_ADEX_RP.bgl"
There's a bunch of techy speak after that line. Then the program closes.
Help!

Hmmm. Can you confirm that you have run the ADE Environment Checker that comes with ADE and are there any issues with that?

Is this an airport you started from scratch or did you modify a stock airport. Can you please confirm exactly when this messages comes up up. Is it when you Select Compile? - is there any message from the compiler?

The message looks to me like you are trying to load it and not compile it. It seems that the system cannot open it. This might happen if you had ADE and FSX running together and tried to open a bgl file being used by FSX.

Perhaps you can list for us the steps you take to get to the error and whether they are always repeatable.

Thanks for replying scruffyduck. Well...yes I did run the Environment Checker and got a green light on that, after I installed the SDK SP1a update.
This project is a modified stock airport. I opened the a'port and made some modifications then did a "save as" and saved in my Docs as "KILM_ADEX_RP.ad" Later I opened that file to do more work on it, then clicked on "Compile Airport" from the File Menu. I'm assuming that compiles the project into a bgl file to go into the addon scenery folder. Correct? When I clicked "Compile", Windows7 asked for permission to make changes and I clicked "OK". That's when this error message comes up and the program closes. And yes , this repeatable.
On a similar note: I opened a different stock a'port a little while ago and did some tweaking to see what would happen if I compiled it without doing a "save as" and the program compiled it and gave me a confirmation notice to that affect. BUT... there was no bgl file placed in the addon scenery folder where it said it was saved to.
I am somewhat familiar with AFCAD and a few other editing programs but I'm certainly not a techie by any means. Am I using the right procedure for saving these files?
Hope this helps you better understand what's happening.
Thanx - Ghost Rider

OK - You have your FSX installation placed in the Program Files standard folder structure. We strongly recommend not doing this. User Access Control will stop you making changes to this area for safety reasons and that will give you some grief with adding third party addons - especially those that use an installer etc. In the long term you might find it a good idea to re-install FSX somewhere that is not controlled by UAC in this way.

Try saving the bgl file to your desk top and then copy it into Addon Scenery\scenery. If UAC pops up then you can tell it things are OK to make the copy

Jon- I tried compiling to the desktop as advised, and again it said it was saving it, but no bgl or xml showed up on the desktop. However I did notice that the UAC listed the files being saved as KILM_ADEX_RP_xml and kilm_...._OBJ.xml, not a bgl file. That doesn't seem right to me. When the compile dialog box comes up it says its going to save it as a bgl .
Where exactly should I install FSX on the hard drive? I should try it now since I installed it just recently and don't have much to lose anyway.

When I first installed ADE9 and ran the Environ. Checker it couldn't find the files in the SDK for the path to the compiler folder. I updated the SDK to SDKSp1a and reran the checker and all was well. However the Envir. Checker section for FS9 was and still is Red but in the red area it says n/a.
I think it can't find the registry entry for fs9.exe. I don't really know if that's important or not.
I tried doing the compile without FSX running and the same thing happens.

Rick

You shouldn't by trying to compile into "C:\Program Files(86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator \KILM_ADEX_RP.bgl"

OK I am confused. Can I first confirm that you are working with the FSX version of ADE?

I am not sure about your reference to FS9 - Do you have both installed or just FSX? If just FSX then the references to FS9 are a red herring.

When you tell ADE to compile the airport what actually happens? A dialog comes up asking you where to save the bgl file. When you select the folder what message comes up? do you get a message saying that the Airport is Compiled or something else?

I suspect that ADE does not know where the FSX Bgl Compiler is. To confirm this go to Settings > Options and then the Folders Tab. On that tab there is a button to find the various folders ADE needs including the Compiler. Check what folders are there now and then click the button. Hopefully ADE will find the correct folders.

Save the changes and try to compile again.

As for where to put FSX - most of us will create a folder in one of our drives away from the Program Files (x86) structure. In my case I have a Flight Sim Folder in the root directory of my D: drive and my sims are installed there. Of course you could put it in the C: Drive.

Jon- Sorry for the confusion. Same on this end!! Yes I am using ADE9X v.1.45 for FS9 and FSX. And yes, I have both FS9 and FSX installed. My reference to FS9 was a side note about the Environment Checker results. The fs9 section was red but the FSX section was ok and had found the files it needed. The left side of the Env Checker page said "OK to run ADE : FSX" (this was green). Hope I didn't confuse you more.

I went to the settings/options/folders page and all the files it needs were listed there. Hold on..I think I made a breakthrough. On the Options page /general tab, I noticed the "save xml after Compile" and the "application logging" weren't selected, so I selected both and saved the changes. Now , I reopened the airport and did another Compile to the desktop and Shazamm. IT WORKED ! BGL and XML files are now on my desktop.
Hopefully this will do the fix. I certainly appreciate all your time and trouble trying to help me out. I'm gonna paste the bgl and xml files into FSX addon scenery and see if the new scenery shows up. Do I need to have the xml files in there or just the bgl's?

Thanx again -- Rick

PS, It worked, my new scenery is showing up. I'm really looking forward to learning this ADE Program. It's a lot more involved than the AFCAD 2.21 I was using.

I am pleased that it is working now. However the two boxes you checked do not control the compile. Also I would suggest that you turn off Application Logging - we only advise this is turned on if we need to see the output. It may slow the program down if turned on.

OK, I'll turn off the Application logging. I really don't understand why it's working now if those changes have nothing to do with compiling. I don't believe I changed anything else. Oh well, count your blessings I guess.
Anyway, thank you for your trouble.
Rick

It is certainly worth having Save XML After Compile turned on in case there are any errors with the compiler. It won't make the compile work, however it means we can look at the XML to check it for why it failed.

I should hope it is! After all, it is capable of doing far, far more than AFCAD 2.21 possibly could...

...and does it "right" for all that too! :D
