• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Existing FS2004 scenery package conversion to FSX scenery

Hi folks. I'm a flightsim hobbiest from Aussie land downunder looking for a bit of help. I have to hand an fs9 scenery package...'Sydney Sea Bases Scenery'..ref to a zip...'Sydcbases.Zip'. I enjoy flying amphibious aircraft in FSX on a PC running Windows 7 home edition, 64 bit. I'm very much a novice when it comes to scenery development and am keen to learn, so that I can extend seaplane type landing/departure facilities in suitable locations thru Aussie. Is there a simple conversion program that will enable me to successfully install Sydney Sea Bases Scenery package in FSX that's easy to follow? I haven't been able to find an update to this package on the net....can someone please steer me to effect this little project? I've downloaded Abacus Free Scenery installer for FSX....Is this the money or is there a better medium that won't naturally cost me an arm and a leg? I keenly await a response...Regards and thanks kindly....I feel sure there would be others interested in similar activity.

Hi,

Did you try to just install the FS2004 scenery and use it? Many sceneries made for FS2004 will work in FSX as well. Only objects with transparent textures usually give troubles. In that case it would be needed to convert the scenery to the FSX format.

If you are not the author of the scenery, converting to FSX might be challenging. You probably need ADE to update the airport definitions and you can use ModelConverterX to convert the 3D models to the FSX MDL format.

FS2004 Scenery packet conversion to FSX

Thanks for your reply Arno. Yes I have tried install in FSX and it gives very abnormal rendition results. The packet is not of my making but was put together by a group of developers with Clive Marriott back in March 2004 for fs9 and I have had it working in fs9 previous but am now more inclined towards FSX in my hobby pursuits. If you have a look at 'sydcbase.Zip' you'll see a bit of a write up on the package. I tried to contact Clive Marriott on the email address supplied in the writeup but it appears to be invalid as of this date. I would have liked to ask him if there was ever an update done for FSX? Does anyone on the forum know how to contact Clive or any of the development team mentioned in the Zip write up so that I can research same?....Thanks Arno, I'll keep my fingers crossed. Cheers for now....Kevin.

Clive is not currently developing FS Scenery as far as I am aware. A shame, as he pioneered a great deal of FS work in Aus.

I'm not sure I could ask him about converting this one for you, having "upset" him a while ago (which I won't go into)

With regard to the files in Q, it is a little hard to know what to do without a clear nomenclature:

The AI traffic files may be able to be converted with AI traffic planner (otherwise they will suppress all FSX traffic)

Scenery Folder:

AF2_xxxxx.bgl files are likely to be AFCAD2 files (which may be editable and recompilable using ADE)

The Gosford.bgl files atc I suspect are the Standalone fictitious NDB's that Clive refers to in the readme.

the .xcl files I am unsure how to re-process (FSX does not use these AFAIK)

Looking at the files, I kind of think it may be too difficult for too little return.

FS2004 scenery package conversion to FSX.

Thanks for your reply 'hcornea'.
Not making any head way with this little project. Can anyone email me a link to Clive Marriott (if that's permitted on the forum?). It would be nice to contact him by myself to make some sort of follow up or even a steer to any of the other guys mentioned in 'sydcbase.Zip' of the team Clive used to put the package together. I can only hope that it may lead to a solution, who knows? Nothing ventured nothing gained...unless someone else has any bright ideas how an old inexperienced fossil like me can manipulate a suitable outcome? Thanks fellow simmers for whatever...light touch on the joystick works for me.

I think the biggest problem is that it uses the Nova and Nova Gold textures and additional scenery.

EH DO YOU REMEMBER CLOUD 9 had made RIVOLTO Eh AVIANO
DO YOU KNOW HOW AIRPORTS CONVERT FROM FS2004 ie FS9
FOR THE FSX

Hi,

The answer is basically already in the post you just quotes. Have you tried to just install it and see if it works? If you want to convert you need to update the airport definitions (often called AFCAD for FS2004) with a tool like ADE and you will have to convert all 3D models with ModelConverterX.

It would be easier to help you if you have more specific questions on which part you have issues with.

P.S. using all capitals is considered as shouting on forums.

Arno this scenario was made for fs2004 only i.e. fs9 so it is not compatible for fsx because when it was published , it came out before FSX was published so when it was released
i install i get nothing thats why im asking how to convert it for fsx

I also wanted to ask you, for example I created my photoreal with FS Earth Tiles for fsx eh I created my photoreal for fsx but when I use ade and select the image I fill in the airport but it doesn't save me the image created by FS Earth tiles

1. Many FS2004 sceneries created before FSX was released work perfectly in FSX. Some do not, you have to try it. If it works but there are building transparency issues, see #3.

2. ADE does not do photoreal scenery - the image is only for use in the ADE program. You need to use a program like SBuilderX to create photoscenery.

3. To convert library models to FSX:
a. Import the library BGL into MCX. Use the green arrows to confirm that all expected objects are present.
b. Use Export Scenery (file type FSX BGL File) to export all of the objects in FSX format in a new library BGL file.
c. Replace the FS2004 library BGL file with the new FSX one.

4. The rest of the conversion is usually to load the FS2004 airport BGL file into ADE, and Compile it as an FSX file. Add any FSX extras you wish to include (like vehicle pathways, fences, etc.). The other choice is to start with the FSX default airport and work from there. I do whichever is easier.

5. If there are terrain issues (roads through the airport, no land where there should be land, etc.), use the ADE terrain tools to fix them. I have a short tutorial here:

Hope this helps,

I get this error which means ?00:23 BGLXWriter Error Failed to locate FSX BGLComp, please update the path in the options when Export Scenery

The error already says what you need to do. MCX does not know where the BGLComp tool is located that is used to make BGL files. So in the options you need to set the right path to where your SDK is installed.
