• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Export Texture's

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on this forum and i am new to all of this, so please forgive me for not being clear all the time or me just sounding stupid.

But here is my question:

I downloaded a fs9 Static ship en converted the model to use it in FSX as an AI schip. In gmax i also made a platform and a Ski-jump for harrier operations for the ship(the Juan Carlos aircraft carrier).

The model is moving in FSX and also the platform and ski-jump are working fine(meaning i can land my harrier on the deck and use the ski-jump for take-offs).
But the textures that came with the original download are not loading in fsx since I edited the .mdl in gmax

Can someone please tell how to make the texture's appear again.

Greetings,
Randy Mulder

No they arent...

I guess I have to import the original texture's in GMAX? If yes, how do I do that?

Make sure you place the textures for the model in a path that GMax is set up to use. You can check this by going to the GMax Customize\Configure Paths... menu item.

I just stick them into the same folder as my GMAX file. Works fine.

Note that GMAX will not be able to read DXT or DDS textures - you must either use something like a PSD file or convert the copied textures to 24 bit BMP, for example.

Hope this helps,

Tom is right on it. Gmax can read JPG, BMP (not converted to FS format, but regular BMP's), PSD files (layers), etc.

Textures in FSX must be BMP or DDS, and formatted for FS. With DDS, its usually DXT-5 format DDS. With Bitmaps, its DXT-3 or 888-8 32bit format.

When you have your 'materials' assigned to the object in Gmax, you have also 'textures' assigned into each material. So, if you have 'ship1.bmp' or jpg, etc, assigned to a material that is mapped to the ship, then when you export, it will rely that you will have that same 'named' texture in FS, such as 'ship1.???'

Note that in Gmax, when exporting, there is a hidden, camoflauged, devious little blue and white checkered button, square, that 'must' be depressed (on) active when exporting or the materials will export in the 'off' mode, meaning they will not show.

Thus... You will have your blue and white checkered material button 'on',
Gmax material textures must be read by Gmax (separate format from FS textures),
and your textures in FSX must be in DXT-5 DDS or BMP's in DXT3 or 888-8.

Lastly, the sizes of the materials MUST be in exact sizes such as 256, 512, 1024, 2048, and 4096 sizes. A 512 X 256 will be fine. A 1024 X 1024 will be fine. BUT, if you have a 1024 X 1025 (one pixel off in size) then that texture 'will not' show in FS...

Hope that helps.

Um, that only affects whether you can see the textures in the GMax Viewport. It has no affect whatever on the export.
