• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Flags? Why bother?

It is nice to have a flag next to your name, but I am still in doubt as to what I have to put there and I am probably not the only one.
FS is supposed to overcome differences between different nationalities and although I sometimes have to grin when somebody tries to express himself in broken English and cannot help but put in a (bad) joke if possible, I do appreciate their efforts in doing it.
I am Belgian, born precociously somewhere high over the atlantic (my parents coming back from California visiting an American GI that lived with them till well after the end of the second world war), live in Holland (and have a Dutch flag most of the time but not always), worked for a French company and spent a whole lot of time for them in the US, Germany and Spain. I enjoyed the hospitality of the Iraqi people at the time Saddam was still in charge and supported by the US and experienced the yearning of the Russian people to make contact with the Westerns.
My grandma could not understand my marrying a Dutch girl, so my sis married an American Jew (misery for the rest of her life, sic) although the German "nazi" boyfriend was worse according to her (although she felt pity on a poor old German soldier dragging his rifle behind him and trying to flee from the Americans, sheltered him with the risk of her own life from the atrocities of the "heroic" white brigade), and by the time my bro married a Thai girl, she probably turned around in her grave.
My best friend is queer, another one divorced, a third one a bachelor and another one just very old.
What I want to say is that it shouldn't matter and I know it doesn't for the majority of you and I do appreciate your being proud of where you live or come from by showing the flag, but as this is the only site I really post on and inadvertently or on purpose give away a lot of my aging identity, I would like to have one representing some symbol that would be of an unbiased world citizen.
The above is supposed to be an issue for further discussion :D as I spent the day trying to recover from my "leisure" trip in trying how to find out, but in vain, the mysteries of texturing FSX scenery objects.

Hi,

Let me start by saying that setting up a country (and thus the flag) in your user control panel is completely optional. Every user is free to do so (or not).

For me personally it does not matter what kind of flag somebody sets or from which country he is. In the end we are all trying to enjoy the same hobby here in the community and trying to help each other.

But sometimes the flag can be helpful as well. It might be an indication that the user does not have English as a native tongue and therefore might have some difficulty in expressing his problem. I feel that can be helpful to know, when phrasing your answer.

Good,

I already have two answers. Thanks.
So I jump to my next question:
Wouldn't it be a better idea to have a voluntarily placemark on Google Earth instead? I know it was custom on some other sites a while ago but it disappeared for one reason or another.
Personally I think it would be/has been a great idea. Keep the flags if you want to, no problem.

"FS is supposed to overcome differences between different nationalities..."

It is? I'm looking at the Deluxe box and I don't see anything pertaining to bridging the divides of the world.

And yes, let's all have people mark their spot on Google Earth. Nothing like adding one more running application to the mix.

For me, this is a forum for designers of a particular game sold by Microsoft. Whether people want to sit around the campfire after dark and swap stories? Guess I'll miss out on that fun.

Sure, that is one way to look at things.
But then, you seem to have an American flag there? Why divulge that info?
Thanks for another contribution to this thread:).

I agree with Arno. The flag certainly helps me when I am responding to someone :)

To me, it's simply a case of "much to do about nothing..."

The only reason I don't have my "state flag" selected is 'cause no one would know what it was! :D

If a person chooses to not have a flag or has a negative feeling about displaying a flag, I would chaulk that up as a personal issue...

For me, I enjoy interacting with all of the nationalities here and the flags are a way of showing who's from where. I actually feel really good interacting with people in distant countries, as well as other American cities, and vice versa. Who knew I'd actually help someone in Australia and get advice from Denmark? Exchange comments with someone from Germany and give criticism of a project from someone in Brazil. Today's technologies make it seem so trivial... but it's not.

I agree that FS can be something that can bring us closer together, all be it virtually, but it's purpose was for entertainment... nothing else.

There are a lot of people and countries that hate the USA for one reason or another. Does that mean I will not proudly display my country or my state flag if given the choice? No...

I'm not here to push anything American, I'm not here to deliberate on political or global issues... I'm here to exchange ideas and share progress of projects.

Have a flag... Don't have a flag... It's your choice...

Think I will have to agree with Bill Learning.
I was merely suggesting it would be nice to have the option to have another symbol next to the country you live in or have a Google placemark. And I may have been a bit too explicit in my reasons for it.
I have nothing against the Dutch flag, nor against the Star and Stripes, on the contrary to say the least and I am fortunate enough to be able to live in a free liberal country.
So far, no comments were made I could not agree with except that I hate to be given no options.
In fact I would be more than happy to be able put in the "FS nation" flag suggested ironically or sarcastically by jonmkj.

PS: By the way, I found a thread on the www.bvr.es site (contributions by many real life Spanish pilots) on a little addon that gives you a more realistic trim (program called realtrim by Nils Meier) and working both in FS9 and FSX. Worth Checking it out.

Hi,

Although integrating Google Earth sounds nice, I would prefer to spend my time on FS related issues, like ModelConverterX :).

About the flags, there is a United Nations and also a pirates flag in the list if I remember correctly.

I've been thinking about this, though I'm not totaly sure why. And while it's not an FS topic, I think that this is part of what General Chat might be good for. We are all real people with real lives. There is more to life than FS (gasp!). I spent the first 40 some years of my life in the San Diego area of California, with a short stint in Texas. Since 1995 I have lived in Denver. I've done short trips to Paris, Chicago, Memphis, Hawaii, and maybe a few others. Not a very exciting life. What an interesting life for you to have lived in so many places. All this to say that I may identify with a flag more than you do. For the most part, I can't tell what flag goes with what country. The flags are really small on my Droid. I have no problem with using the flags. I really like it when people use a photo of themselvs as an avitar.
