• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Further reducing dds count for Sketchup model

Hi Arno,

May I ask your assistance with the problem of having too many dds texture files for my ferry models? I'm using the 'minimize drawcalls feature' which is great, but the contact sheet it generates seems to contain only the texture images that I imported into the model. It does not contain any of the little built-in texture images that Sketchup uses for many of the standard materials. The result is that I'm sometimes ending up with say up to 15 dds files for a model. I notice that the contact sheet (if that is the right term) is often mostly all black, so the naive thought comes to mind that there should be plenty of room for some of the standard Sketchup texture images that are used in a model.

In any case, thanks for any suggestions you might have,

Larry

Does the Sketchup textures tile across a surface? If so,... they can't be minimized.

Almost all of Sketchup's little textures *are* usually tiled...

Hehehe, you beat me to it! a few days ago I had the same question but didn't get the chance to post it. Then it ocurred to me that those SU textures are tileable (they repeat X/Y) whereas the contact sheet textures are positioned and that I know, cannot be tiled. That is a pity because it would help packing everything up but that is a SU limitation not MCX.

Thanks for the information everyone! That explains it, and suggests a work-around. In a lot of cases, I'm using one or another Sketchup texture greatly enlarged just to mottle a surface to give it a little depth. Ideally it would not repeat at all. And in other cases, I am using only a few repetitions.

When I 'use texture image' and then 'position' [the texture] and depending on how large I make the image, it could repeat or not. I now see that when my texture repeats (say a railing) that texture is not included in a contact sheet, however if it does not repeat, (a flag for example) it may be included in a contact sheet, depending on its size.

So one thing I could do is use the 'edit texture' feature on my worst offenders to make non-repeating textures that will serve the purpose. The advantage is that I'll soon have a collection of such textures that will be more appropriate anyway. :-)

Edited:

Here's a link to a few screenshots of one of the ferries I just finished - the MV Tacoma. Except the dds count is something like 15! It does however work in FSX. :-)

Hi,

I have an idea on my todo list to see if the drawcall minimizer can handle repeated textures better. If a texture is only repeated once or twice, so could for example copy the texture multiple times into the combined texture sheet. That would probably still improve performance. But that's something I have to look at in more detail.
