• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.

FSX Getting runway height

Is there an easy way to get the correct runway height?

I have used google map to locate the centre of my runway (-25.252874, 152.335538) but what is the easiest way to get the height?

In FSX I can go to the correct location. Do I just have to keep changing the airplane altitude until it sits on the ground?
 
Connect ADE to FSX and it will display the ground elevation below the aircraft:

Hello Bob,...

Is this a Default FSX Airport? What altitude is it currently? I believe that Google does have a topography.... as well as Yahoo Maps... You might even try government websites. Some have the topography maps to view online.

I feel like a total idiot!!!! I never noticed this. Always saw the location, but never noticed the elevation. I have been taking my alt from FS and subtracting height of plane to get close numbers. LOL!!!!

Thanks for the tips and suggestions.
The airfield doesn't exist in FSX. I got the coordinates from Google map.

In FSX, I "parked" over the centre of the runway at 287meters, with heading 0 and speed 0

ADE then rotated the airfield. I assume that it is because the plane is heading vertically up the screen (ie true magnetic north) but the magnetic declination (is that the correct term?) is around 10 degrees. So the GPS heading is actually 10 degrees East. And to fly a true north, I would have to fly 350 magnetic. Or have I just shown that I have absolutely no idea.

You have ADE locked to the aircraft. In this mode the aircraft will always be up and in the center of the screen. Click the Lock Button (under the connected indicator) again and ADE will revert to the display facing N (true) and the aircraft symbol will match the heading of the user aircraft.
