• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Gmax error again

You will note that Arno rarely steps inside the "Aircraft Design/Modeling" boards.....

He is wise... and scared... :S

Who in their right minds creates planes that take months and months to make when they could have a real life...

and scenery is nicer.. more serene...

gray eyebrows man..

No Bill, DO NOT decide to recreate an earthquake complete with animated destruction .....

Oh dear, don't give me ideas. I kind of like those post-apocalyptic scenarios...*Cough*

(What about "FSLunatics.com"?)

Going through, still adjusting Materials due to Vertice/Material limitations, and finding that oddly, model clusters in a single 'material' that were crashing, when I get them working and some will export anyways if youre not exporting the entire plane, that the little cluster that wasnt working, is only 240Kb or 360Kb. You would think that a crash would be MASSIVE, but these are small object models causing this........

Makes you wonder.

Well, last night, I closed this case. Unsolvable. I will release the FSX version with a noted 'FS2004' model file. I have spent 4 weeks (1 month) trying to get this to simply compile.

The FS2004 version file works fine in FSX. Thats good enough for me. I will state in the documentation that its a FS9 version MDL file, so no one will get it and throw a tantrum that its not in pure FSX format. I can make the DDS files for it to help out the X sim.

It was so nice to start working on Mesh again last night. Things once again going smoothly. :)

Put it in big lettering on the homepage. A note in the Readme will be overlooked!

BMPs in DXT5 format will do. Unless exactly specified in the .mdl file, FSX always looks for .bmp files first!
So if you want to save a few CPU cycles, stick with .bmps.

Does it really save CPU cycles though? Keep in mind that every single .bmp has to be "vertically flipped" by the CPU before sending to the GPU for display.

The major advantage of .DDS format is that they are saved in a "vertically flipped" format to begin with, eliminating the CPU time needed to do a "software flip..."

Bjoern,

Bill Leaming is correct. DDS format is fastest in FSX format. less calculations per second.

:D

And you tell me that NOW?

Brb, converting lots of textures.

:D

(Batch files, heck yeah!)

I think it was Wozza that found out you could use DDS textures on a FS9 MDL file in FSX.

Pretty awesome find...

I was more referring to the "BMP vs DDS for models in general" thing.

yep... I was just noting that it was Wozza who found out we could put DDS textures into a FS9 plane in FSX.

It helps my memory. Work with me Herr Wunderkind...

<--- is looking forward to the movie Iron Skies.... Giant iron flying saucers! heh... :)

I bet my books about the Luftwaffle that your next add-on after the movie will be one of those flying saucers. ;)

P.S: Ever thought about doing more german WW2 birds?

Hey Bjoern,

I was thinking of the Me-163 Komet or the Arado Ar-234B, or (and especially) the beautiful He-111 also known as the Gotha 229 twin turbine flying wing. One of those three.

Oh, and that super Junkers, the gigantic airliner. I would like to do that one with a full interior.

Go-229 =/= He-111. ;)

I'd say either do the Ar-234 or stay pacifist and do some pre-war airliners (He-70, early He-111, Ju-90, early Fw-200). ;)

The G-38 sounds nice. For an extra bonus, you could place wing views in one of the wing's passenger compartments. :D
