• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Got a dumb question

Hi all,

I looked around and never really found the answer to this question.
I have a scenery that has custom objects and the designer said I can tinker with it and make changes as I will. The only thing is he doesnt have the source files any more or cant find them. So what I want to do is go into the
folder and take apart the only bgl file thats there besides the afcad file.
Is this possible ? The reason is he put a few things in the scenery that doesnt go there and doesnt look right . And he made some nice building
and he made a nice Hangar but only put that hanger in one time. There are actually two of them. So is it possible to get the object I need from that bgl
and maybe use it in something like EZ scenery or rwy 12.
I do know it was created with FSDS and he used airport for windows to make the scenery. Im sorry if this is wrong forum for this post. And Im sure there
is a post concering this somewhere I just didnt look in right place.
I sure wish there was a scenery tool for this stuff for Dummies.

Thanks
mb

It may be possible to get the objects from the Bgl file. What won't be possible is to change those objects in any way. If you want to see what is in a Bgl file then you will need to decompile it.

Is it a FS9 or FSX file? SDE can decompile both and show you what is in the file. What it doesn't do is to extract the objects. It can do this and a later version will have this enabled. At the moment, to extract the objects you will need to use NewBglAnalyze (for FS9) or BglAnalyzeX (for FSX). Once you have the objects then you can put them into a library - Library Creator XML is probably the easiest way, or if you are working in FS9 and have EZ-Scenery then you can use the library manager tool that is part of the program.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. It is a scenery for FS9. I did decompile the BGL .
What I got then was a file called xxxx.sca . (I assume scasm) .
It was in the form of a text file. So what should I do now ? or Next ?
This part of scenery design is new to me.

Thanks again
Mb

Well that is an old file format. I am not familiar with it but I am sure one of the other guys will step in and help

Thanks for the help. hopefully someone can step up and give me some ideas.
I dont want to change anything about the objects. I just wanna access to them and yes maybe even add them to my library since I only really design for myself. Not confident enough to release anything yet.........

Below is a copy of the bgl file Im trying to decompile and extracts the objects from. Its the only bgl in the scenery besides the 2 excludes. Maybe someone can check it out and see what they can get and email it to me or at least directions as to how to proceed. By the way as Ive mentioned before I do have permission from the original designer.

Thanks

Well I can confirm that it is not a FS9/FSX bgl file but of an older type. Thus the objects in there are certainly SCASM based.

Thanks for trying to help anyway. It seems the original author of the scenery cant get everything together and its scattered all over his puter. So he not able to help out much.

Maybe someone on here will have some success in what to do with the file.

Im gonna keep asking around on some other forums as well in hopes of an answer. Will keep checking in back here .

Thanks

mb,

What version of FS do you want to use this scenery in. Perhaps Airport for windows can import the sca file. I tried it and it looks like it reads the sca file after decompile with BGLAnalaze (not X). But airport for windows needs FS9 and I could not get it to finish the import.

If you want to use FSX then you may need to rebuild in GMAX to get good frame rates. I have a SCA2GMAX.ms file to import to GMAX but some of the commands are not recognized by my script. I might play with this, but can't guarantee anything.

Hi

Im using it FS9 only. The scenery was designed ofr FS9 and could be used in FS2K2 as well. Im only using it in FS9 though.
Thanks for the reply.....

Mike

It is not really easy to convert a BGL file into objects you can use in another scenery. It theory it should be possible to convert the SCASM code into a API macro again, so that you can use it in a tool like AFW. But to do this, you would have to know a bit about how the SCASM code works.

Putting them into an object library is also possible, but that would even require more tweaking and SCASM knowledge, so I would not really advice that approach.

Maybe the script Ron adviced is the easiest solution, but I have no experience in how well this import works :).

Well Thanks !

Ive played around with it some more and I cant seem to get anywhere
with it myself. I may just abandon the whole concept all together . Ive never run into this before. I guess its gonna be alittle over my head. However
I really do appreciate everyones feedback. I may have to resort getting me
a copy of a object design program and try my hand at creating new objects
from scratch.

Thanks
Mike

Well there are thousands of objects for FS9 in libraries already. You should be able to find something suitable to use without having to make you own (unless you want to of course :) )

Jon

Yes I know I have hundreds (so it seems) of objects myself. Its just
that These particular objects was created specifically for this airport
and are about 99% accurate even down to the signs on them. The hangars are so close and the old buildings are as well that finding one to look like them have been fairly impossible (in my search). If I could find some that looked even close I would just add my own signs and names on the buildings.
Since I live within 10 miles of the airport Its kinda hard for me to want anything less. (maybe I want too much) The designer used to work at the airport 10 years ago and he disgned according back then and much has changed. Anyways, thanks again, Im still in search of away.

Hi Mike

I can understand that :) Well I guess one alternative is to make your own objects or ask one of the designers here abouts if they would do it for you
