• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Ground polygons: polygons vs textures

I was wondering if it is easier to make layer in Photoshop, making appropiate alpha chanel for each layer, set transparency of each layer and make just only one texture for what we want to do. With all respect, I'm not a computer guy so I'm so dump about tweaking ASM. May be the result is the same, but I'm not sure about that. If anyone can discuss about this would be helpful.

Hi,

You would have to use a very high texture resolution to get really sharp edges and lines. That is why most people prefer to use polygons for this kind of features, they look better.

I see..... Thanks for clearify this for dump newbie like me.
Just another two quick questions;
1. I was wondering if a lot of gmax planes on top of each others will cause low frame rate or the FS will see them as if they are just only one polygon.
2. I did that once, the taxiline and apron, before I read this Wiki. But I complied them separately into line.bgl and apron.bgl in FS2002 stype, tweaked ASM to hide shadows, and put them in scenery folder. It works! I saw lines and aprons as they meant to be. The question is why we need to tweak them to be a single bgl file. Does it boost the performance?

Hi,

I moved your questions in a new thread, as they were not really discussing the Wiki article.

No, they will affect the performance. All of them will be drawn. So it is usually best to limit the amount of layers you are using.

No, it is not necessary to tweak them to separate BGL files. You could also tweak the ASM code so that everything fits in one BGL file. But the tweaking is easier for multiple files and it will not matter so much for the performance.
