• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS [GUIDE] How to create custom aerial scenery

I cant get it to work with two cgl packages it only seems to load 1 of them. 1 is for the airport and that is showing up. but the second cgl is not showing up which is only a few squares away covering a small bit of the town. Well i can see that its loaded if i zoom very far out. but its done with the same settings regarding the zoom levels and everything..

There is an aerial scenery bug. A second aerial won't show in proximity to an already placed aerial. I don't know the distance from the previously placed aerial. but it is significant. Perhaps it is an LOD11 area. I'm unaware of an compiler flag that would allow co-existence.

Hi,

Followed this tutorial to the letter, but the new aerial image just doesn't show up. I thought it might be something to do with the image from Orbx EGNM, but removing that makes no difference. My console log can be seen at https://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/ortho-images-not-displaying.449030/

Any help appreciated!

EDIT: After further research, it is the same bug mentioned above. Completely uninstalling Orbx EGNM (rather than just moving the CGL folder) caused my tiles to show up. How annoying!

If you made everything according to the tutorial as you say, then my best guess is that your edited .png file is the source of the problem
I maded a mistake when i generated XYZ tiles where you need to have only the right one layer selected (page 30 on tutorial). Now it's ok.

I've invested some time to try large sceneries.
So I created ZL15 images from the Faroe Islands, merged the tiles manually using Photoshop and then devided the areas by islands.
Then I followed the tutorial.
First, I tried it with the ZL15 for max. and min. when generating the XYZ tiles. In MSFS I followed your steps and the scenery was created. It took around 20 minutes for just one Island (around 400MB of image data).
But the scenery looked very pixelated and on lower altitude the scenery was gone.

So I started to try it with ZL19 with the same ZL15 image. Generating XYZ tiles took very long, around 1h. Then I created the needed tiles using tiles2bing and fired up MSFS.
But when I try to build the scenery, the sim freezes. In task manager it shows 1% CPU usage, 8GB of RAM and 0% GPU usage.
Even after 1h nothing chaged.

I guess it's too much to create a scenery with 263638 tiles even if they're just 2KB each.

Any suggestions how to create big scenery?

Not sure ive also tried to make my scenery bigger like double the size but then it just never keeps finishing the file, it just grows in size to around 280gb then my hdd was full. which seems off since the other scenery i made that was like half the size in square was 1,28gb completed.

That's because merging many 4096x4096px files increases the file size by 4 or even more.
Because of this I tried it with ZL15, the final size is around 4GB

For me 19 zoom levels is too pixelated, gonna try with 17

ZL 19 is more detailed than 17

I had a working aerial scenery created. Now (after the MSFS Update and also after installing the Paderborn free airport) whenever I put the aerial package in my community folder and load the game to the specific area, the loading will never finish. The blue bar will come full to the rigth but it won't start.
To get the game working again, I need to delete the package and also to remove some maps cahce etc.

Anyone else has this problem with the patch / Paderborn or is it still working fine for you?

I have the same exact problem. In my case I made 2 sceneries that are working separately, but not when i put both of them in the community folder. They are about 37km (23miles) from one another. When I try to use both I get this infinite loading screen. Using more than one image in the same city causes one of them not to load.

I have no experience and I am just following the guide, it works flawlessly... But would love to know if there's a workaround or we'll just have to wait for a fix.

it's a known bug - at the moment we can't have more than one custom aerial imagery in close proximity :(

Also had infinite loading screens, but prior to the patch so the patch itself isn't the problem.

Hi, but I do not have 2 aerial images. It keeps loading forever even if I only have one aerial image now. I only have one single package in the community folder.

I had that with one aerial as well actually. It was when I went for zoom level 23 if I remember and my tiles folder was over 2GB. Reverted to zoom level 19 and all was fine.

Tried it - redid at ZL19 but still endless loading. Size is 12MB. Can it be that somewhere in the sim it "remembers" the old non-working image and now has a problem with it? I've retried to coompile the simple aerial sample within the SDK and this works fine...

Found it... I had installed the "Paderborn Lipstadt" free airport. And this uses the same filename for the aerial. But how can this be. These 2 aerial are far from each other...

Hi karlo922,
I created an aerial für German Airforce Büchel Airbase which is missing in MSFS 2020. The filename of my CGL is "sai203.cgl", same for Paderborn. Had the same problem of never ending loading when the blue bar was at 100%. Killed MSFS with Task Manager.
Removed Paderborn Lippstadt and erverything works fine.
Regards, Joachim

Thanks again for Augustin's great tutorial and Devinci's idea to us SbuilderX'.
I did also create an aerial for ETNT (Wittmundhafen AB). The CGL is "sai201.cgl". Works perfectly with Paderborn. To me it seens that the CGL names are not unique and appearently not linked to the geographic location. karlo922, what is the location of your aerial? I'll try now ETSN, far away from Paderborn.

Hello,
No matter what i do with the CMD window, it will not recognise my tiles2bing folder, and keeps saying "is not a recognized as a internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

Absolutely stuck right there......

everything else worked fine.. does anyone know what may be wrong?

edit: re downloaded the zip, put in c drive documents folder, re ran and now it worked.....:scratchch
