• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Has MS made mission development so hard that no one is doing it?

I'm finally putting together a system that I will be able to run MSFS 2020 on, so I'm looking for add-ins that I'd like to install and it appears that nobody is creating missions for MSFS 2020/24? Has Microsoft made it so difficult that only actual programmers can make missions? Are there no tools (like Instant Mission Maker or FSX Mission Editor) for MSFS2020/24?

Reportedly, Asobo has an AI software routine to create many types of Missions as part of a 'Career Mode' ...semi-automatically.

Personally, I have not yet attempted to make a Mission, nor have I used Career Mode in MSFS, but there are YouTube tutorials..

BTW: No search results are returned for the word "Career" in the MSFS SDK Docs as of today's date.

SDK Docs regarding "Missions" are here

Your reply actually validates the point I was trying to make...The SDK is intended for developers/programmers, not the every day user that wants to make their own mission. The only tool I have found so far is the BushMissionGenerator...and even that requires some level of programming/scripting knowledge. It's surprising to me that, at this point, someone hasn't created an intuitive, GUI based mission creation tool for MSFS2020/24.

The everyday user is a user, not a creator 🙂
When a user wants to create it becomes a developed and have to deal with developer tools..

BushMission is a nice tool, has a GUI, and doesn't require a lot of thinkering..but of course has a learning curve just like any other tool.. developer need to learn to create

If there isn't anything else may suggest that the missions aren't so requested?

In 2020 Asobo scraped the mission editor because they know the mission system would have changed in 2024, a mission tool may come in the future

I would disagree with this, just go back and look at the number of user created missions for FSX...there are thousands of them! I believe part of the problem is there are no longer very many simmers that also have programming experience and are willing to invest the time to create intuitive tools that allow everyday users to easily create missions of their own. From what I have read, MS was/is very slow to provide adequate documentation for the SDK, was/is this intentional because they see add-ons (aircraft, scenery, missions) as a revenue stream and want to inhibit those that would provide these things free of charge to the simming community? Unfortunately many of the developers of the tools that were used so widely for FSX are part of an aging community and sadly a number of them have passed away.

I would agree with this expression of concern ...up to a point. ;)

But I have recently begun to see some good things happening in the FS Development Community and its interaction with Asobo. :)

I am now inclined to consider Asobo as becoming more progressive and open-minded about such things as you cite above.

Like past FS version development teams, they are compelled to answer to MS marketing's exploration of new potential revenue streams.

The good news is that Asobo has progressively overhauled FS SDK methods and SDK documentation, while retaining internally, some legacy SDK code compatibility.

Additionally, Asobo dramatically improved FS' run time rendering engine, while also allowing greater realism in the content displayed.

IMHO, they have increased willingness to take note of end user goals, while eventually (even if quietly) resolving troubleshooting issues.

I think it is likely that Asobo will see the mutual benefit of making end user custom content development / distribution easier over time.

I do see the number of highly experienced FS Developers and FS enthusiasts are posting less often, and some are "retired" or "expired".

However, I am confident that a majority of those dedicated FS Community members still check in and are posting now and then.

Like many of us, they continue in their efforts to learn the newer SDK methods, and may offer input when they are more up to date.

In the mean time, one may wish to explore some innovations for the FS community by those currently ready / willing / able to code:

yes and no, to all 3 questions :P

missions for 2020 and 2024 are quite complex so it does take some coding to do very much
there are some bush missions on flightsim.to that are fairly advanced- look for the SAR stuff, he uses some audio voices and custom scenery in some of his work, very cool stuff
there is also a BushMission Generator on there (a basic mission builder) that will get you a very basic (but working) mission started just from a Little NavMap flight plan

i used it on some of theses 2020 missions too get started but i ended up doing a good bit of extra after the build to get things the way i wanted

now ive been trying to build them in the 2024 sdk with some early success but nothing tested fully yet, most of the images i needed may not be used etc
