• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How did I do this?

I have a bgl from a few years ago that started out as a Sketchup model exported to DAE and processed by MDX.

When I open the DAE model, it has 70000+ traiangles and 90000+ texture vertices, so it won't export to MDL. (Which means I can't create a BGL object out of it!)

When I import the BGL file, however, those numbers are down by half.

I'm sitting here wondering what black magic I performed to get the DAE model with 70000 triangles to a corresponding BGL file with 30000+ triangles. (Since I can't export it to MDL...)

Any ideas?

Hello:

Assuming you still have the original Sketchup model available, you may wish to try exporting as a *.KMZ format file.

There are reports that the Collada *.DAE 3D geometry code stored inside that file format is more successfully imported into other 3D modeling programs.

Perhaps ModelConverterX will also be more successful importing from *.KMZ.

Alternatively, have you tried importing (a copy of) the Sketchup *.SKP file itself into ModelConverterX ?

PS: When you prepare (a copy of) your project for import by ModelConverterX, consider removing all inner faces of solid, non-transparent objects to reduce model complexity:

Also, try un-checking 'Export Hidden Geometry' in Export Options.

Hope this helps ! :)

Hi,

For fsx models that amount of triangles is no problem, only for fs2004 it is. It is on my todo list to try to work around that.

But for good performance in FS it might be wise to reduce the complexity anyway. Most models don't need that much triangles.

For most of my scenery models I keep the triangles below 7,000, not 70,000. :)
