• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

hello , i have a questions , how to add background photo in gmax ? like sketchup , we can add google earth image so we can easily know that building size.. but , how to do this on gmax ?

sorry for my bad english :) thanks..

If you are interested in a building size, why not just measure it in Google Earth using the "ruler"? Even if the spot is irregular so you want to draw over an image, using those measurements gives you a fast way to calibrate a plane containing the image. Just make a basic box with the dimensions you measured. put it over a plan in gmax and scale the image on the plane to match the box. Voila, no need for messing the georeference via lat and long.

Very good idea. You can try that and tell us how the accurate it is.
I think it is not accurate enough. You can miss a hundred of meters by measuring the length. If you have satellite image about 3000 meters width. A hundred meters error in measurement is only 3.3 percent. I don't think I can use ruler in google to be very accurate.

I never meant to measure the length of the photo, just the building. I've been doing this for years, and the resultant mdl fits sweetly into its little spot.

To my opinion I think gmax reference plane is better than measure individual building since if you have numerus buildings it can be a headache.
Nevertheless, I really think that you need not to agree with me. Do whatever it works for you is the best.

of course, the op asked how to assess a building's size. It appears you've made other assumptions as to what the OP's need is. You may be right, but I just restrict myself to the OPs question.

I think I answered RIGHT to the question (Bull Eye!), don't you think? Never mind,bob5568. I think whatever method if it leads to the same result, it is OK.

The tutorial here will explain...

I use SBuilderX to acquire the background image.

Regards, Dave.

This tutorial is good, I also used it in the past. Just one thing, you cannot use the length of the runway as reference since the world is round. So the length that published as information of the airport is the length along the curvature of the earth. If you do use that as reference, it will never match the real world. If you do photoscenery accompany with ground poly, you will get an headache. They will never match either FS2004 or FSX.
