• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX ILS Feather

I am designing a new airport using FSX Planner. I used the ILS tool to place it along the center of the runway on the head of the runway that has the ILS.

I noticed that the ILS feather (the long one) is placed where I put it or move it, that is along the runway centerline.

However, I see that when you do place an ILS feather, there is also another much smaller feather (isoceles triangle) situated somewhere back but with an offset to one side of the ILS feather you place.

This smaller trinagle is ALWAYS appearing when you drop a new ILS. So I wonder where will be the localizer signal? I am asking because I noticed that in one of the airports I have I was doing an automatic ILS approach (normally I do it manually) and the plane caught the glideslope but as it went down it became clear to me that it was going to land on the edge of the runway!

Do I need to move that smaller feather manually to align with the longer feather?

Generally I would expect the smaller 'feather' represents the glide slope. . The ILS localizer would usually be placed at the far end of the runway it serves. The Glide slope will be placed at the touch down point (off to one side of course :)) If this is the case with FSX Planner then you certainly would not want the GS placed with the localizer. This would make the touch down point off the far end of the runway.........

Great explanation Jon! that's something the FSX Planner developer failed to explain in the help file. Now I have a better idea. Haven't figured out how to design approaches yet but apparently nobody knows :)

Anyway, the ILS feather thing is finally cleared out thanks to you. Happy New Year 2013!

There is plenty of stuff around on designing Approaches. I would not know how to do it with FSX Planner. In ADE we have a graphical designer for approaches that should make it easier.
