• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Inserting Scenery

Merry Christmas to all.

I'm working on Seething airfield in Norfolk at present and would like to add a couple of hangars from the Rwy12 objects library.

So far I have got as far as typing the GUID code into the 'Name (GUID)' box and the 'Scenery Type' box shows as Custom Scenery Object. The scenery object icon, a square with diagonal cross shows where the hangar should be on the airfield & that's fine.

However, when I compile the airfield to a BGL (with no error message showing) the scenery object (my hangar) is nowhere in sight. I suspect that I'm doing something fundamentally wrong but there's no guide for placing objects at present so I'm a little lost.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Mike

Hi,

Could it be that you are mixing up FSX and FS2004 style GUIDs? I think FSX Planner is using the FSX style, while Rwy12 library are using the old FS2004 format.

So which type of GUID did you type in?

Thanks Arno,

I think that you could be right though all I can say is that the GUID I used was made up of a combination of 32 characters & numbers with no brackets or dashes.

Do you know of any place I can find scenery compatible with FSX Planner? I'm particularly looking for a world war two type RAF control tower (or watch office as the RAF called it), RAF C Type hangars and small light aircraft type hangars.

Thanks again,

Mike

There are some rules for converting FS9 format GUIDs to FSX format. I am sure there are posts here about what to do. FS9 objects should work fine in FSX provided that the guid format is correct.

Hi Mike,

As Jon said it should be able to work, maybe you can to convert the GUID format a bit. But to be sure of that I would check the XML that FSX Planner made to see how the GUID ended up there.

Hi Mike,

FSX Planner won't include the hanger model in the bgl file, only the pointer to it. So I believe that you have to make sure the hanger scenery object is able to be loaded by FSX. I know that this has been done successfully by several people before using FSX Planner, so hopefully one of them can say where they placed the models.

Hi Mike,

And make sure that the Rwy12 library you call it from is also loaded in FSX, as Russell pointed out. Without the library BGL being loaded you will never see it :).

Iv'e made a little progress but I'm not 'out of the woods' yet.

I couldn't get scenery up by typing in the GUID into FSX Planner so tried using the RWY12 Object Placer. Now I'm at the stage where the scenery object, a hangar in this case, appears when I go into the flight sim but it has no texture i.e. it's just a big black shape.

Still, i'm going in the right direction and enjoying the challenge.

Hi Mike,

The textures should be in the texture folder belonging to the scenery folder where the library BGL is. But if you just installed the Rwy12 library they should already be there.

It could also be that the FS2004 object uses solid colours (so no textures) and in that they they will indeed show black in FSX, that is a known problem. The only solution to that would be to use objects in the FSX format.

Hi Arno,

I downloaded a freeware airport (Caernarfon) from the Horizon scenery site. It's excellent and all is well except for the two hangars which appear as black shapes. I must be missing a texture file somewhere or it's misplaced.
All other parts of the airport are fine i.e. control tower, trees, vehicles, and even a picnic bench with chairs and umbrella.

Thanks for your continued help.

Mike
