• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Check out the detail on this pedal steerable nosegear. The strange looking skid is part of a "gravel kit" installed on this aircraft. Note the extended housing added to the gearbay to accomodate the skid:

How do you guys find so much info on landing gears!? That's so awesome! My Yak-15 LG is dog poo compared to that! And I almost killed myself searching for pictures of it, pictures that you could actually look at and see stuff...
Heck! That landing gear alone is more detailed that my whole planes! Eheheh
By the way, what's the planes texture size!? 2048x2048? 4096x4096?

All textures are on 4096x4096 sheets; diffuse, bump and specular. This is FSX of course...

Ah, that makes more sense now! I though FSX could only support 2048x2048 sheets!

I'll bet that's sure to get the crew's attention about the time the nose gear touches down on soft gravel :) .

Awesome Bill!

Ah, 732ADV w/ gravel kit.
Milviz, I guess. Or CaptainSim, but that's unlikely.

I'd totally go for a 732 model, provided it doesn't hurt FPS.

Oh my, I should have known better than to think no one would figure out so much from just a nose gear screenshot in a developer's forum. :tapedshut

Looks like something I would have done as well, lol. The real artistic work here is the texturing on those surfaces, it is brilliant! What exactly does the "gravel kit" do? Prevent dust or rocks from flying into the fuselage?

EDIT: Ok, nevermind, I see now. Found all the info I needed to know here >>> http://www.b737.org.uk/unpavedstripkit.htm quite amazing really.

From the looks of the 3D modeling work, I think the developer forgot that the kit has a "clearance" to allow for possible flat tire scenario. This particular kit you have displayed here is completely touching the ground! But I believe that may be the position for when its not being used but if not, that's a big oOOps.

Actually, there's ~4" of clearance between the bottom of the skid and the ground. It's really tough to tell with the perspective of the screenshot coupled with the lack of true depth perception in a 2d medium. The second screenshot's shadow shows it isn't on the ground...

Note also that this gravel kit has rounded bits on the leading edge so it can "pivot" across any really large rocks. ;)

I came late, but I see them gravel kits day in day out up in Arctic Canada at Yellowknife. I'd love to see it in FSX native and CS could do the favor.

It looks so real.

I wonder if the texture can exceed 1024x1024, since I read in SDK about textureing aircraft models under texture map types. The first paragram is:"For Aircraft texture maps cannot currently exceed 1024x1024 pixel in size"

True but what the SDK says and what is really the case are different pairs of shoes. Somebody just clean forgot to edit that. On the whole I think the SDK doc is pretty good, however.

That is some excellent meshing, mapping and photoshopping, that's for sure.

Oh wow n4gix, you are right...lol I took a real hard look at it. FS seems to use a really weird view angle for 3d models, where the rear of planes look fat and the front skinny or pointy....you don't really get a true perspective shot.

It's been the excellent work done on the DC-8 that inspired me to animate the hydraulic pistons for the nose gear steering. Normally I wouldn't have bothered since it's extremely difficult to position a camera close enough to appreciate...

Oh come on! This is like complaining about the lack of sex in a monastery! ;)

Also, I was just counting 1 and 1 together.

Thanks n4gix, I am glad I inspired you! And I had no idea you where the developer! That is amazing work and really FINE texturing, a lot of people can texture but your textures, they look like a grilled chicken that's been WELL baked to perfection.
