• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Library Object Manager and thumbnails.

I've searched as much as I can and I am all thumbs on this. Pun intended.

Brand new here so I apologize for redundancy and also being redundant possibly

Ok I have the "Yet Another Big Thumbnail" file in my ADE folder unzipped and ready.

I figured it was a rather straight forward operation of simply setting the Thumbnail destination path to

C:\MSFS\FS Design Tools\Airport Design Editor\Yet Another Big Thumbnail folder and all would be well.

Again new. However getting the hang of things.

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a X-number step approach on how to set this up so that I would be able to see the thumbnails for the objects in the object library. OR is this not possible?

If you could I read crayon best if you know what I mean.

I can see where this would save a whole bunch of time when searching for buildings etc to put on my airports rather than the trial and error method of lets see what we get.

The default location for thumbnails is the Thumbs Folder inside the relevant version folder. So by default the thumbnails would need to go into c:\MSFS\FS Design Tools\Airport Design Editor\XXX where XXX is FS9, FSX, P3D or P32 So you would need to copy the thumbnails for the pack into there. You copy them in respecting folders - that is copy everything as it stands in the zip. You may get messages about some already existing and you can either pass or replace as you choose.

Alternatively you can set your own custom Thumbs folder if you wish in the Library Object Manager:

To be sure you may not get thumbnails for all the objects you have but the biggest of the thumb packs does contain a large number. Also be aware that this applies to library objects and not to Generic Buildings. At the moment there is no central repository of Generic Buildings and their thumbnails. This is largely because they are created from code and very easy to change size, texture etc.

Ok great I think. I am getting more and more thumbnails to show up within the LOM inside ADE. However I think with my limited knowledge of folder management I am going about it not as efficient as I could. I am opening up each .bgl folder and copying all files to the default thumbs folder. It IS working that way. Is there a better option? When I use the thumbnail option depicted above I get empty folders even though I know there are thumbnails in them. Same thing with the add file or add folder sub options. Maybe I am not understanding how they work exactly?

Thanks for your patience!

you can just copy the contents of the zip file folders and all. ADE does not need the thumbs to be all in one big folder. If you are getting empty folders then that would be a result of how you are copying stuff - are you using Windows Explorer>

Yes Windows Explorer. Now with a little more background on how this works, I noticed that when I call up the LOM in ADE and select an object without a thumbnail, then, push the find thumbnail button, the LOM is defaulted to look here.. c:\users\me\documents\myairportdesigneditor which is what I named that file on startup to keep track of it, coming at this program with zero background.

Why does it default there? When I surf via the LOM to a file I know has open thumbnails or unpacked rather, then I see thumbnails and I assume I could assign that object whatever thumbnail I like however best to have the proper object with the thumbnail.

Perhaps I did something wrong on setup not knowing any better?

I think I know why I am getting the empty folders now. MyADE... folder above is where the LOM defaults to first to look for thumbnails. There are none in there.
