• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

When one has a "light" fx attached to an object should one see a representation of that effect in MCX? Like, shgould I see a bounding box or the light mdl/fx in MCX. When I select Texture Render Night Mode should I see anything. Think I would see a point of light or something? Same if I attach a light that is not an effect but a separate light model? Studying MCX as I post this.

Hi,

If you have selected the "show attached objects" button in the toolbar you will see a small dot at the location of the attached effect. If you have selected the "show particle effects" button as well MCX will render the FX file itself and you should see a light.

Btw, if you have a FX file with a spotlight it might not always be rendered correctly from only the FX.

Thx, got that working but now another related question. I wish to attach a light to a lightpole however the light is not an effect. Its from a separate mdl I created using a texture. Can I attach a bgl or mdl of the light to the lightpole (which is a mdl/bgl itself)? Still testing/researching but I thought I would ask while I am searching.

You can attach another library object as well with an attachpoint, use the library object option in the attached object editor. You need to specify the GUID of the other object then.

Ah, I think I was using a name and not a GUID. Think I found a 2nd way using the Merge Objects editor. Works good, but not sure if I control when the light comes on or off. No option like I see in the Attached Object Editor.

You would have to add a visibility condition to the attached object to control the visibility.

"You would have to add a visibility condition to the attached object to control the visibility."

Does one apply the visibility condition once the light is attached to the pole or do you mean you add that condition to the light object itself before I would attach? If the latter the object already appears I already had done that as the light appears at night and not during the day. I'm just looking around in MCX for that condition option so I can apply it. I take it looks similar if one is adding an effect and opens the Effect Parameter Editor window?

The effect parameters only apply to effects. For other types of scenegraph nodes you need to use a visibility condition as defined in the modeldef.xml file.

If you used the Merge Object approach you can go to the Hierarchy Editor, find that merged part (turn on Highlight Selected) in the list on the left, click on None under Visibility Condition on the right, and choose one.

Hope this helps,

Tom, as a followup I did what you said however the drop down list gives me no selection like a DAY=OFF and NIGHT=ON. It is giving me selections of others' model selections I presume. Am I supposed to find my light mdl there or am I to try other mdls selections (that to me does not make sense)?

I created my light and I believe all I did was make the textures transparent in the day and opaque in the night... no visibility conditions. Now, I loaded the light mdl by itself into MCX and see no way to set visibility there either, once again only selecting other model settings in the Hierarchy Editor? Jut to make clear, my light is not an effect but is a mdl made with textures.

Or is it that I should not have to set visibility because I have done that basically with the transparency?

What am I not seeing? thx...

AFAIK models cannot be tested in day vs night visibility without a custom xml entry in the P3D modeldef.xml file?

It sounds like you do not need a visibility condition unless there is some 3D object involved.
