• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 MCX - MDL9 Writer error

Hi everyone,

just making my first steps in scenery design for FS9. The goal is to make an animated airfield scenery of Houtem AB, an important military airfield in non-occupied Belgian during WW1, in the vicinity of the Belgian Military HQ of King Albert I in the small town Houtem, near the city of Veurne (Furnes en français). The airfield does no longer exist today but I was able to find some old photos of it. The dream is to make an online, multiplayer flight along the Belgian frontline on the 18th of november 2014 to commemorate all heros of the great war, especially my grand-oncle who faught at the river Yzer near Diksmuide!

I have already made the airfield rwy, txwy, etc with AFCAD and I placed a few Bessonneau hangars with EZ scenery.

In Sketchup I've found some beautiful 3D models of WW1 fighters with Belgian skins. I managed to export them as .DAE and import them succesfully into ModelConverterX but when exporting them as a FS2004 MDL, the MDL9 Writer gives the following error: This object has over 65535 vertices and can not be exported to FS2004 MDL. I did search the internet and forums and I did found out that this error is due to a limitation of the MDL9 Writer itself but i did not found any solution for it. Is there one? What could or should I do next?

Thx for your replies!

Hi,

The only way is to simplify the model.
For instance, a lot of vertices are used to "paint" the numbers and the flag, etc, on the plane. Editing the components and replacing all those superfluous vertices by textures, will probably solve your problem and will make the model easier on the fps as well.

Those Sketchup models are usually not suitable for FS, because they have thousands of polygons. It's usually faster to use that model as a guide to create your own low polygon model than try to simplify it. You can sometimes even create your own textures from screen shots of the complex model.

Hope this helps,

Hi guys,

Thx for the quick replies! I got the message: refining or redrawing! Is there a program to easily simplify such a 3d object? The purpose would be to use the object as a static one in the airfield scenery.

Greatings

Model Converter X has a Make LOD feature, which will simplify it.
