• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MCX model conversion problem

Hey Arno the Great,

question, is there a maximum size a model can be for MCX to convert?
I have a structure that is 1100x500 and 50ft high.
I did a mdl conversion earlier this week same building, but this time its not working. minor changes needed a re-compiled mdl.
I have done about 8 models so far close to this size and had no issues with it.
I get no error messages, not failure indicators, when i click export, it places ASM and XML files, and i think scm, but no mdl. It originally shows but then disappears, unable to find on the drive, hidden system admin account search for the file and nothing.

Got this from MakeMDL log. FS9

err, copy and pasted the error code, but far too long.
The log is attached

converting from .dae to mdl

ok,.. if I understand you correctly,.. you created the dae through sketchup,... and no error messages given. Whats the number of drawcalls and texture vertices on this dae file?

How many textures does this model have?

54 dc's and 25 textures.

ok,.. you asked if there was a maximum etc... its not so much a max to MCX as it is the compiler having a max. I'm not sure why you would need 54 dc,.. does seem like alot for a 4 sided building, no matter how tall it is. Is it possible to cut the model into peices (like 2) or simplify it so to speak?

Hi,

There is no maximum on the size of the model. But if you have many triangles it could be that you have too many triangles per material.

There makemdl errors seem to indicate triangles with collocated vertices. Normally modelconverterx should filter such polygons out.

not 4 sided. see photo

i will split the smaller into own mdl. maybe that will fix it

And one more thing, I have lost the lights added in MCX to objects. They were working before, now they are not. When I load the mdl into mcx they are still there, just no-show in sim.

The "Tranform Object" Tab or Icon.... is where it is. Considering the lights,.. you probably will have to re-place them, since you have moved the model.

Hi,

Modelconverterx uses effect files for the lights, so these fx files have to be in your effects folder.

For the lights, moving the model MDL file should not affect how it uses the FX files. It is hardwired to read directly from the EFFECTS folder inside the FS directory, correct?
All my effects are in the Effects folder of FS.

The MDL is loaded into ADE and placed using that, however the same happens on multiple objects. I will try a different method to place objects(sbuilder, xml, object placer, rwy12, MCX wizard) and see if I get the same result.
Using FXEditor, the effect still works, just not on the compiled MDL. I think it may be lost in the ADE compilation of the airport objects BGL, but will address with Jon if that is the case. Will report my findings later on.

Im not familiar with the whole triangle speak, how do I check/control this?

Hi,

About the effects, there is a bug in fs2004. If you have an exclude in your scenery, it will also exclude attached effects of your own scenery. So that might be bothering you.

Lol. I forgot about bug. I remember that from long ago. Is there a fix for it or a way around it and still keep the exclude for default Taxi signs?

As I remember you might be able to change the file name of the exclude file (so it is listed either first or last alphabetically - I don't remember which it should be). Worth a try...
