• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Mesh creation with QGis

Please help, I have been trying to create an inf file using qgis after exporting a raster file as a geotiff, yet no inf info is created. Can you advise step by step of how to achieve this? My last attempt using resample.exe via Command prompt resulted in a "Missing parameter" error message but it did not say what was the missing parameter required.
Thanks!

If you attach your current *.INF file inside a ZIP file, we can see what is involved.

You can find below… very easy to use.

GeoTIFF-to-INF

Sorry for my late response. Too much paperwork and errands after retiring per FAA regs (65th bday, CFR part 121.Air transport Pilot) Also, I forgot to mention this mesh scenery I am trying to create is not for FSX, but for FS9. Attached please find the files. You may find some that are not even required, but, I am trying. Thanks for bearing with me in my ignorance as a newbie fs scenery designer.

What you attached above is the scenery BGLs for an airport created via ADE.

Are you wanting to create a sloped flatten that blends the airport into the surrounding terrain mesh ?

If you do actually want to make custom terrain mesh for FS9, please be forewarned that what you propose to do in creating a custom terrain mesh for FS9 would involve massive amounts of data processing and work, and is a cumbersome task even for advanced users.

The resulting terrain when displayed in FS9 would be only slightly better than that using the default terrain mesh BGL(s) in FS9.

While there is a very highly detailed data set for Puerto Rico available since 2018, the size is massive at 1/2 Meter between elevation data points, which would require extensive system resources in terms of computer disk space, memory, and data processing time just to prepare the data for use with FS 2004 SDK Resample ...which then requires additional work to create terrain mesh BGLs for FS9.

Even after all that work, FS9 limits displayed terrain resolution to LOD-11 / 19.2 Meters between elevation data points (default terrain mesh shown)

Depending on your computer, you may be able to display the full 1/2 Meter resolution mesh data set on FSX and/or P3D (default terrain mesh shown)

However, I would recommend you consider treating yourself to a retirement gift, and buy a computer able to run MSFS 2020 (default terrain mesh shown)

GaryGB,
Once again, thanks for your reply....I just realized I sent you another (wrong) file that I was fiddling up with from my laptop, instead of my (retirement MSI gaming pc :wizard:).
The files in question are these ones now attached. What happens is that I was looking at the youtube video from Rotornut on creating scenery mesh to be used as you mentioned with FSX. But he was usingGlobal Mapper which is totally different to Qgis, at least of what I could appreciate how easy he was able to create the inf and related geotiff files. But somehow I have become too fond with FS9 (perhaps its historical value when it was first deployed near the Centennial of flight celebration, and in those days I had what today is my older trusty HPG-60 laptop which with its performance, it was ok to run fs). Now my laptop is no longer being used and I managed to have fs9 running in this win10 pro 64bit gaming rig. Also just for the challenge it brings and as a starting point to learn scenery design to perhaps in a future I can share with the sim community, in my interest of providing as close as the real view of what you see is what you get, compared with the real scenery you see in the real planes.
In the attached files, you will find what I tried to play with qgis in terms of geotiff and other functions which I got some data trying to replicate what the globalmapper interface did in rotornut's video. Somewhere in the video rotornut mentions that you can create a blank inf file and the program does the rest. In my case nothing happened. But looking elsewhere in FSD forum I saw a post by Arno, in which he was using qgis but did not give details of the how. That is where my post came to be. Before I leave I also included a screenshot of the command line error I got when running resample.exe for fs9, and the other programs that rotornut recommended to have handy in the same folder to run the geotiff, and inf files. The background image I got from CPX airport was from google maps and used it with ADE for fs9 to create the ADE files.
Again thanks for your help.

I just realized that not all files could be uploaded to the FSD server...some of them where qgis contour and hillshade files apparently too big to upload.
