• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi i am making a (secret) jet model. I need to export it from sketchup to open in gmax while preserving the groupings. How can i do this as when i export from sketchup it gives me a .dae then i convert with model converter to .3ds and open in gmax but all the groupings are lost and are necessary. How can i convert and open in gmax without losing the groupings?

Hi,

I am not sure if the grouping is in the collada file, if not it will be hard. But I would try to set the collapse modelpart option in modelconverterx to false and see if that preserves your groups.

gmax is a pain in the ass to import. Unless you can convert directly into a gmax file you will always loose the groupings and/or individualized objects.

So... you must save in Gmax as a Gmax file if you are importing it into Gmax.

If you have the Quake exporter, you can save or Export as that, but you should also save in Gmax so you can work with it there.

Also, when you export as a model or scenery object, you must have it in Gmax as a Gmax scene first, then export into the format you need, BGL or MDL.

If you want MCX to export different groups you must change the color of each part in that group in Sketchup. Then after export/import detach each part of that group into separate objects, if necessary, then group or link them.

Hope this helps,
