• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

New Gmax designer notes

Knew it! The nacelles are unique enough, after all.
Glad they were easily recognized by an expert. :-)

The original TF-33 engines my friend got for modelling the RB-57F were accidentally 1/81 scale instead 0f 1/72 scale, which is how they ended up in the spare parts box and later got incorporated into the Meteor PR-19.

The engines were the first thing I built quite a while back and they are both angled a bit. (not quite pointing straight forward). I may try to modify the mesh, or just redo them using splines. Although the first time I gave splines a try it was too confusing trying to look from all 3 directions. Now with some more Gmax time under my belt it does not seem as daunting.

I was the same at first with splines but now it's my favorite method of modelling. If you were to look at some of my objects you will most likely find a spline at the bottom of the stack. ;)

Hello All,

Well after a long break for various reasons, I am now finally happily retired and able to jump back into aircraft modeling for flight simulator. I have switched from GMax to Blender in the process. I completed a 7 part youtube aircraft tutorial from Crossmind Studio and here are pictures of my production result. The first two pictures are the tutorial aircraft, and the rest are my produced result.

I have also subscribed to CG Cookie for a few months and am working on their hard surface modeling course which is another small airplane.

I was able to move my GMax aircraft mentioned above into Blender. Tried first with the GMax script gmax2obj.ms for about a day but it never worked. Then came to my senses and used this method recommended here instead which was successful.

GMax -> MDL file -> ModelConverterX -> Wavefront.OBJ -> Blender

Here were the files I needed to install:
FSX SDK GMAX Gamepack
MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 3
ModelConverterX

ModelConverterX is fantastic!

Had my GMax model imported to Blender in less than an hour, and that included the GMax prep before the export - import.
