• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Night Texture file type

Hi Arno,
you are right, there are two underscores befor LM. The reason is, that the exportet texture file ended with an underscore "Cladding_Stucco_White_.jpg". So I have to set a second underscore and LM to the original texture name. The day texture ended also with an underscore and there it is OK!

Hi Tejal Bernardo,
as I said before I put the same file in the same format in the 2 slots. Day slot works, night slot bring me that horrible warning!

sorry but I can't say other things; I am in a hopeless situation:banghead:

Maybe some problem with the photo editor or the way you exported this, I had problems with this issue, and this was that I had not the last update so when I exported as dds it was a corrupted one. but not seem the same case.

Tejal Bernardo,
one question: do you work with SketchUp8 or with some other programs? Once I made a test with a model in GMAX with night and day textures. I found now the mdl file and tried to import this file in MCX. And look there was the day and the night version without a problem (in material editor the day slot and the night slot filled with the hole path in the logfile!)
I think it is probably a problem with the exported dae-file, which not includes the night texture?!

I was working with dae files, the problem was very similar, I was having problems when loading the night textures, but this was because the textures itself was corrupted, phtoshop exported the Dds files corrupted, once I updated the plugin all goes well.
But the process is very simple itself. not understand what could happen.
you can't export the dae file with night textures, you apply them afterwards. you take the same day textures and edit to be a night texture (darken and adding lights, etc). once in Mcx you load that texture.

... and this procedure doesn't work in my situation:( SketchUP exports dae and with day texture it works very well! Thank you much for trying to help me.

Hi,

I am not behind my FS pc now, but I will try to reproduce this problem tomorrow. Just to make sure no bug slipped in for assigning night textures.

Hi Arno, hi friends,
I think I've got it:)
I have made a trick: I exported a simple cube from GSU to dae and imported it as usual in MCX. I found my textures (jpg-format).
Then I exported without changes to the mdl file. And afterwards I reimported this mdl-file in MCX.
In the meantime I changed my day-textures to night-textures, renamed those with the suffix _LM and loaded them in the night-slots. It works indeed.
The exported effect in FSX was not the best (I think the jpg-format wasn't good). I updated the files with MCX mass texture editor to dds-format and now all is OK.

I think MCX has problems to find the original night jpg's after dae import - do'nt know why-; it needs the mdl file import like your example with TUG car (youtube). Mybe there is an other way but I am content:D

Arno, is the MCX looking for night textures in the folder created by Sketchup when the DAE file is exported?

Hi Arno

Have you uploaded the MCX after fixing the bug?

Angelo

Yes, a new version was put online after I fixed the bug you reported.

Actually I don't have to upload it, it goes all automatically :)

Arno, is the MCX looking for night textures in the folder created by Sketchup when the DAE file is exported?

Depends.

The dae file contains relative paths for the textures. If you add the same folder in front of your night texture, then modelconverterx will find it in the same folder. Without the folder part, the night texture would have to be in the same folder as the dae file. Or any of the folders on the search path.

When exporting to mdl the relative path is usually stripped from the mdl. So that means when you load the mdl only the texture search path is used.

Hope this makes some sense.

Arno

I just tried the last development update and I see no difference.
I see only night textures when the add night texture" is above the "convert textures".

Shouldn't I have also the day textures?

Angelo

Hi Arno,
perhaps I am too stupid for this stuff.
If I export from GSU normally the dae-file is located in ...SketchUp/ automatically a folder with the name of the GSU-model is created as subfolder. There are the textures. If I create my own night-files (_LM) and put them in this folder MCX only finds the dayfiles! If I put the dae-file from the frontfolder (SketchUP) in this subfolder MCX further can only find the day-files. The search path I dont know:confused:

If I export the resized dds files they will be found in the folder "for FSX" an there I create a new subfolder named so as the modelname. And there I put the textures and the exported mdl-file.

My way - as I said - is reimporting the mdl-file and setting the nightfiles in the night-slot with MCX. It is a bit complicated but it works. I think it would be better if the dae-file could informed with the nightfiles without reimporting the mdl-file ;)

If you made your night textures are jpg and not as dds, of course the add night texture step should be before the convert textures one. Because if you would first convert to dds, it would try to find the night texture as dds as well.

So first add night texture and then convert. With your test model I then got both textures in the folder I indicated.

I guess I should make this easier. Let me see if I can make a short tutorial, because I feel it should not take so many steps.

Ok Arno

I tried it today and it works great.

I was changing the output file location in the convert textures line, to where I place my textures, which is Scenery\Global\textures and it wasn't working.

When I didn't changed it , worked great. I converted already about 150 dae.

I just have to cut and paste the textures from AddonScenery\texture folder to my Scenery\Global\texture. I can live with that.

Thanks Angelo

Where is your scenery located? The global texture folder is not on the default search path, so modelconverterx would only find textures there is your bgl/mdl files are in the global scenery folder.

Also, I would not advice to put custom scenery in the default folders. Keeping it in separate folders makes it easier to organize things.
