• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 No Foot Print!

Jon, I am updating terminals for my project and have been able to update all except one. The others are already in the project and are just as should be. The one in question generates but i cannot seem to get the detailed footprint for the model. I am attaching a folder with the files needed to generate the model using ADE. Can you take a look at this model and see if you can get ADE to generate a detailed footprint for it? The snips attached shows the model in the UI but no footprint. Many thanks for any and all assistance you can provide. I am emailing the other files to you as they are too large to fit here.

Your email had no attachment. Be aware that footprints are for ADE display purposes only and do not affect the display in sim. Some models are complex to the extent that ADE can run out of allocated memory or give other error resulting in a footprint not being created. Footprints are generated by Arno's code. You should have received an error message if the footprint generator fails to create a footprint. This can be either from the Library Object Manager or the User Models List View when they are added or updated.

If a footprint is not generated then there is no remedy to fix at this time. The larger the model the more likely it is that the footprint generator will fail.

Jon, I have sent a link to where you can download the files. Thanks.

I am replying in the forum in case this is relevant to other members

You say that the model you used was extracted from the modelLib of the Microsoft KATL enhanced airport.

I added your model to a project and did not get a footprint generated. There was no error message which there should be. I also have the Microsoft-KATL enhanced airport models in my Library Object Manager.

  1. File name
  2. Model in list
  3. Appears to have a footprint
  4. Appears not to have a thumbnail

I found that both your model and the stock model for this terminal do not have a footprint to display. It's hard to tell why but there it is.

This won't affect the display in Dev Mode or in Sim. Sorry not to be able to give better news

Jon, many thanks for confirming this for me. I got the exact same results when i tried. I was using ADE for placement of the model as it is much more learned than the DEV-mode. I now will have to spend some more time with the DEV Mode.

Jon, Update on No Footprint! I was able to get quite a detailed footprint of the model in question by using the generate model footprint under the special tools menu in ModelConverterx. All is well now. Many Thanks.

Can you explain exactly what you did to get from MCX to an ADE footprint?

Can you explain exactly what you did to get from MCX to an ADE footprint?
OK. Here is what i did to get the footprint to show in ADE. I open the model in ModelConverterX and I used the Special Tools menu item Generate Footprint. The Model then in the ModX program as a footprint of the model. I then saved the textures and the Glif files to a folder and then put that folder into my project package sources folder. Opened my project in ADE and used the Model Manager to load the model into ADE to use in my project. I then used the add model menu option to get the model to show in ADE. So far so Good! I retired for the night feeling pretty good about everything.

Second part of this story.
I started where i left off last evening. Please follow the snips to see what happened. Snip new-1 is how the model looked in MODX after import. Snip new-2 is how the generated footprint looked in MODX when completed. I then saved the files to the folder in my project, Snip new-3 show the files saved, with the model textures in a subfolder of the same folder. Snip-4 shows the build after updating the models using the model manager in ADE. Snip- new-5 shows the model in in ADE and as you can see, it is there as a footprint. I then after placing the model built the package for transfer in the sim. Snip new-6 shows the results of that build. As you can see, there was 0 failed. Now comes the part that i am not able to explain and do not have any idea why things look as they do. Snip new-7 is how the model appears in the sim. I checked the altitude, and it was correct and on par with the project altitude. So, this is where i am now. Any idea or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. A couple for Arno... If anyone would like to test further, i can send the link to download the files. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to fully explain it all. Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Question 1. After generating the footprint how does it get attached to the model?
Question 2. Should the generated be exported as an object from MODX?
