• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX OPT replacement (via C#)

I hope this is the right forum for this type of question. If not, my apologies!

I'm looking to play around with the managed side of the SDK (C#) and was wondering if it's possible (via C#) to build a replacement Object Placement Tool? My main issue with the current OPT is that it doesn't allow for a nice method of browsing the object library.

I'd like to build a tool that could preview the objects in the library (say by type or color) and then place them in the 3D environment.

Is this even possible? Or should I move this question to another forum?

Thanks!

Dan

Hi Dan,

I guess it can be done. But there are some work arounds involved. As WhisPlacer does, you would have to create SimObjects for all of the library objects, else you can not move them realtime using SimConnect. The default OPT does not use SimConnect, but is somehow hardcoded into FSX.

Do you mean an in Sim placement tool such as Instant Scenery or one that can place objects (such as say the older RWY12 for FS9)?

Are there any good SDK examples that might steer me in the right direction?

Yes, actually, I think the tool in Instant Scenery is exactly what I'm trying to do. I probably should just get that program, but I do like to try stuff on my own. :)

If I remember correctly there is an example in the sdk to place a sim object at a specific location from code. So I would take that as a starting point.

As I recall Whisplacer used to be open source although I think the author may have removed it from the public domain. It is written in Java; which, of course is not too dissimilar in syntax to C#.

I'll look into both suggestions - thanks for the help both of you!
