• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v4 Overlapping aprons question

I know this must have been answered before, but I searched and I obviously used the wrong keywords. Most aprons in the US use concrete nearer to the terminal and asphalt further away. In editing airports with ADE I have used two options. The first is to overlap the apron types by a small amount. The second is to align the apron vertices exactly where the two material types meet. The former method relies on some priority that the sim uses for materials, as it seems at least for me that asphalt will always overlay concrete and hid it. Or maybe it's just the order in which I draw aprons in ADE. The latter method overcomes the "hiding" issue, but if the vertices aren't exactly aligned, a gap is created and the underlying layer (airport background) shows through in the sim.

Now here's one further question. If aprons are overlapped, does that impact the GP offset needed in P3d4? I don't see why it would, but I just thought that I would ask in case anyone had seen problems with overlapping aprons.

Jay, the sequence in which stock apron materials are applied was a frequent topic of this forum some time ago. However, if you can't find the info, my tutorial "Adding Realism to your Airport" available from my website displays the sequence graphically about midway through.

Re your second question, I'm not clear what you mean by "GP Offset". GP polys don't use Flightsim materials.

Thanks. I'll take a look at the tutorial again, which I must have looked at a while ago now.

What I meant by my second question was if I have the edges of two aprons overlapping, does that impact the offset needed for a GP that is located on top of such an overlap? I wouldn't think it would affect the GP offset, but P3d4 sometimes behaves differently than FSX.

The order of display for apron types is set by the compiler. There isn't a way to change this. The same applies to runways and taxiways. There are other ways you might create aprons with the Custom GP editor for example
