FS2004 Problem with granularity

#21
I tested the nocrash in hyerarchy editor in FS2004: it works ONLY if you make the element ALSO as a PLATFORM. If you make the element only "nocrash" or only "platform" but not BOTH, then it will be included inside the crashboxes ! Do this is normal ?!?

Hi Dario:

Would you be willing to ZIP an archive of the example FS2004 Helipad you refer to in the OP above, and attach or link to it in this thread ? ;)

PS: Did you create the Helipad 3D model in GMAX, or was it instead created in a 'different' 3rd party 3D modeling application ? :scratchch

GaryGB
Yes, I will try to link here the model. I use Sketchup 2017 to model in 3d

A platform automatically gets the NoCrash option added, so it's weird only the combination seems to work for you.

I'm having quite a bad cold the last days, so I haven't been behind my development pc to test. I'll check later.

Hi,

I had a look now and to me it seems the NoCrash option works fine. When I set it on a test object the crash boxes is reduced in size. The results are sometimes a bit funny, but that's more due to the way MakeMDL works I think.

Hi Arno:

I performed a quick test of the FS9 NoCrash toggle via MCX Hierarchy Editor with one of Gary Mills' (aka "Gman") FS2004 helipads.

https://library.avsim.net/search.ph...ry+mills&Sort=Added&ScanMode=1&Go=Change+View

I am unable to see any FS2004 crashboxes in the MCX 3D preview when I enable display of crashboxes with the toolbar button.

Are we not supposed to be able to see FS2004 crashboxes in the MCX 3D preview for imported FS2004 3D models ? :scratchch

FYI: I do see crashboxes in Gary Mills' (aka "Gman") FSX helipad 'strobe' BGLComp scenery library objects. :pushpin:

PS: I tested MCX Hierarchy Editor FS9 NoCrash toggle on a Gary Mills' (aka "Gman") FSX helipad 'strobe' BGLComp scenery library object.

MCX Hierarchy Editor > ModelPart > Right-Pane dialog status changed to True, although Magenta crashboxes did not update or turn off.

I exported that edited object as a MDL, then re-imported it to MCX; the Magenta crashbox did update and turn off.

Curiously, however, the Hierarchy Editor > ModelPart > Right-Pane dialog showed the CrashBox status of False was incorrect.:yikes:

Hi Gary,

The crash boxes in the preview are only updated after you export the model again. It's not information that MCX can determine itself, that's something MakeMDL/XtoMDL needs to do. So what you see is right.

Also on importing the model again MCX has no way to match if a certain object has the NoCrash set. That information is only stored in the crash tree. So that's why on import the NoCrash is always false.

Dario:

Your linked URL above, is in a domain that restricts download access unless one has- or creates- a registered account on 'initial' navigation to that URL. :alert:

That site domain did, however, grant access on the second attempt to navigate to that URL. :scratchch

However, the textures are missing; could you please include them in a ZIP with the MDL ? ;)

Would you please attach it to this thread inside a ZIP, or link to it at another domain which does NOT restrict access unless one has a registered account ?

Thanks. :)

PS: For example, Richard Ludowise (aka "rhumbaflappy") makes his files available on onedrive.live ...in this way:

With the link above, everyone can access the file. If you see the login screen, then click below, where a phrase like "access anyway" (or similar) is displayed. I have no other restrictions on that file. Also: i cannot see how to add a ZIP file here in my posts... do you know how to do this ?

Hi Dario:

The extensions I use in a rather securely configured FireFox browser does not show a work-around during the first attempt to navigate to that URL, and the browser is subject to multiple connection attempts to access the browser sub-system such that the would-be scripting causes a performance lag !

BTW: An initial attempt to navigate to that URL via Internet Explorer version 8 shows this:

MSIE_OneDrive_LIve_Acvcess_Attempt.png

Notice that it (IMHO, rather arrogantly) offers no alternate option to still access the URL.

:censored: Microsoft !

I will be the only one who decides what to do- and when- ...on my own (Windows 7) computer ! :stirthepo

FYI: Click the [Attach Files] button at the bottom of the screen when composing a post to a thread to browse and attach a ZIP or other file. :pushpin:

Hi Dario:

I see now that you have posted on this topic previously ...here:

https://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/object-with-platform-and-crash-detection.441124/

While it is possible that Arno may have additional insights on the issues involved with your MDL having the attached platform and crashboxes, IIUC, one must have assigned a texture as a Material to the MDL in order for the [Auto Platform] feature accessed via the MCX Attached Objects Editor ...to complete its intended function properly. :alert:

I believe it would be best that you assign "some" texture Material (ex: a solid color in the Sketchup default palette of Materials) at least as a 'place-holder' before using the [Auto Platform] feature accessed via the MCX Attached Objects Editor. :pushpin:

If the issue persists, then I would again encourage you to attach to this thread, your 3D model in question ...with all mapped textures. ;)

PS: Did you "scale up" the 3D model from a smaller original after exported from Sketchup ? :scratchch

FYI: Some possible factors with troubleshooting your 3D model platform and crashbox issues:

Hi,

Assuming the round circle is the helideck, when I remove the platform and set NoCrash to true on that round circle I get these crashboxes (so the helideck is outside of the crash box):

With only the platform is doesn't work as intended indeed, but with platform and NoCrash set it is OK again.
