• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Problems with Textures

I’ve taken over a half-finished airplane project from a friend that I’d like to continue working on. However, just looking over the project has already raised a few questions and issues. If anyone with SDK experience would be kind enough to give me some advice, that would be really great.

The main problem right now is that the textures can't be found in the simulator. The console displays an error message stating that the textures at the path ../textures/filename.dds cannot be found. However, the path exists (in simobjects/airplanes) and the textures are present.

What could be the problem here? Are the textures actually (also?) assigned in the model files, or only in the XML/config files?

Im not 100% sure what you mean when you say the textures 'exist' in "(in simobjects/airplanes)"
the xx.PNG textures should end up being pushed by blender into the "Simobjects/Airplanes/<someAircraftFolderName>/texture" folder (msfs2020)
you should not have dds textures in the sdk's PackageSources folder
its Not ../textures it should be ../texture without the s

its not enough to manually 'copy' them to the sdk location- you want blender to 'push' them there (as png's)

"What could be the problem here? Are the textures actually (also?) assigned in the model files, or only in the XML/config files?"
Yes they are physically written in the .gltf model file using relative path
the sdk is reading the gltf model file for these texture locations so it must be written into that model file correctly on blender export

Blender needs to use png for input, the sdk also uses these png textures as input to Convert to xx.dds as it compiles the model and textures

Ok, thanks for that info. is there any plugin or tool that reads gltf - files with dds textures from msfs?

yes there are some apps that read these, paint.net and nvidia texture tools specifically
adobe photoshop has an nvidia texture tools plugin so it can be used with that as well

you must convert them to png to assign, edit or export them from blender

Asobo gives us the plugin we need for blender, it allows us to assign these PBR png textures in blender and export them correctly
The SDK is what Converts or Compiles these png textures into the Custom DDS files the game uses

I use this freeware utility for working with single dds files directly- it supports all the dds texture formats msfs uses 'out of the box' by default
ALBD - .DDS - BC1 (Linear, DXT1) [can also use BC7]
ALBD (Blurred) - .DDS - BC3 (Linear, DXT5)
COMP - .DDS - BC7 (Linear, DX 11+)
NORM - .DDS - BC5 (Linear, Signed)

I also use this set of scripts to do batch conversion, but it does take some setup and file editing
