• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Program Question

Hi guys...

Some of yall know I'm taking a computer programming course in school this semester. I made a simple program for me and Jonmkj to use to help us stay organized when doing flight plans, etc. It also will count total operations.

My question is: How would it be possible to "link" the two programs together where what I would put in the box would also be shown on the other person's screen?

This is being coded in VB.Net.

Help, comments, or criticisms are great!

Have you tried a Google search? When I get stuck I find Googling turns up most things. StackOverflow is a good resource as is The Code Project.

So...you're asking if two computers can be linked together, and share functions?
I know with remote desktop software person A can operate person Bs computer. Maybe there is a version where both can interact.

I suspect it can be done - consider a chat program. There is a connection made here.

I had a program once that was really basic and used email to pass data back and forth. A bit up from that was a web service. However I am sure there are many better ways.

It can be done, but assuming you are both sitting behind NATs/Routers, there's no easy way for any two given computers to talk to each other, without either opening ports on your NAT/Router to forward to the machine running the app, or you have to use a 3rd computer intermediary that sits directly on the internet (web service, specialized server for your protocol, etc).

The actual communication just needs standard Socket stuff (or you could also use something like WCF I suppose).

With something like IM/Chat, you have to log the chat client into a server, and then all your communications are between your computer and that server, if you are chatting with someone else, the server forwards your messages on to the other clients.

Same with MP apps, they generally use some sort of match-making server (gamespy, the old MS Zone, XBox Live for Windows, etc).
