• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Well, I don't do that.
I am creating a photoscenery, just to be able to show my autogen above it...
I am not reconstructing 3D models based on satellite imagery.
I'm not suggesting you are doing that, though a lawyer may disagree as what you are doing is combining a photoreal image with landscape mesh to present a 3D model of the world. However, I'm not here to argue the legalities of the case, simply to agree with your caution and to counter the wails from those who understandably would like to use your work but don't understand how intellectual property rights work. What you have done is amazing; you need to convince the owners of the geodata to allow you to distribute it as freeware as a great advert for their products!

"
If your ever in South Africa, we can rent an Airplane and take our own damn Photos. Lol"

Does that mean it's OK to take pictures from an airplane or a drone, and use them as orthophoto scenery, place autogen & 3D objects on top of it and THEN release it as freeware?

This was just a joke, please don't hang out of an aircraft and take pictures, or even worse, fly a drone over an airport.
At one stage I inquired using an Arial Photography service. (aircraft, their are very popular here, do to mine surveying). If I remember correctly it cost about the same per square kilometre, but they lock you into taking massive areas. (it includes processing the imagery)
The images are you're property just as if you were to to buy it, if I am not mistaken ( I remember their was some weird clause around it though)

I'm not talking about flying over an airport with a drone (I don't even own one), I know that's a big NO NO :) It was just the princip of it, and apparently it's OK to use our own photos as a base for local sceneries.

I am owning a drone ( - no, I have to agree, flying near an airport is an absolute no go - ), and also created a small orthophoto with it.
It is really quite a lot of work - as long as you don't have the scripts to do it.
But for a project like Africa, this is more than a life-task. Even for a small country like Bavaria, a single person there would work for decades...
(Drone images...)

I was looking at ORBX Project Africa, Matthias's work is so much better. I wonder how they got around the Insane price of Satellite imagery? I would easily pay double their price for his work.

Well, they are not using satellite imagery (they use it in very, very small areas).
The rest of Africa is landclass based, so the data comes from land cover data, I assume...

Orbx's True Earth series uses satellite imagery, but the Global Open LC series is, as Matthias says, replacement landclass for the MS default. It's very good, but not a patch on what Matthias has achieved.

As annoucned, I have modified my script to create the photosceneries, so that it should work on other machines, too.
I've uploaded it here:

Splendid Matthias, lovely to see this!
Could you maybe create a tutorial for somebody who never developed any scenery, explaining how exactly to do this?

Thank you for sharing thies with us :), unfortunately, I won't be able to use it because of the ArcGIS 100€ subscription...
But I can't wait to see more autogen from you Matt :)

MatthiasKNU you are a legend.
Cant use it myself because I hand edited all my Imagery already, but I think many will use this amassing tool.

Well, this is far from a perfect version. I have now tried to make the script available as soon as possible.
In the readme I already described how to use it, but I can also do a tutorial! ;)

And yes, hand-edited imagery is always better, but if you want to create areas > 10000 sqkm... well, that would make you happy :p

Totally understand that!
I am also not yet happy with the fact that ArcGIS is needed. But with the GDAL tools this script would have been very slow, so I stayed with ArcGIS (it runs about 3 times faster than GDAL).
At least now those who have ArcGIS on their computer anyway can create sceneries with it!

Furthermore, I will now upload the autogen packages piece by piece!
