• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Re-using library objects - copyright

Hello,

I am currently working on a couple of mostly ultralight and agricultural airfields which are not in stock FS2004/FSX.

I found great GA hangars from Dennis Waggoner and sent him an e-mail asking for permission to use his objects in "my" freeware sceneries (I want the bgl and textures to be included in the sceneries I make as one download).

However, he's not on that e-mail any longer.

Any idea how is it with the copyright issues in this case? Could I include his objects (bgl + textures) in the package I am working on or rather not as I don't have his explicit approval? (his hangars are freeware, were made for rwy12, and there is nothing in the readme about the copyright).

I have the same "problem" with some objects from UKVFR Library.

Any ideas? Thanks,

Milan

If his hangers were made for RWY12, a placement program, then they are obviously meant for redistribution in sceneries. Otherwise why place them? This is an example of implicit permission.

If he does not explicitly prohibit any type sceneries for redistribution, then you should be able to use them any way you like... just give him credit in a Readme file.

I agree with Dick. If the library has been publically released then it is generally fine to use the objects. Check the Readme that should come with the library for any restrictions and always acknowledge the authors.

Thanks for the answers. Now it is clear for the hangars :)

What would you recommend for the UKVFR libraries? The readme says that without a permission from the author it is not allowed to redistribute... etc but the author is not reachable any longer. I think I should forget about using UKVFR objects but just want to have it confirmed...

thanks

That is quite difficult. Many people develop stuff for FS and then drop out of the scene for some reason or other. In the past when this has come up I think the view has been that you should try all reasonable methods to contact the author. If that fails then you might consider it reasonable to use them but make it clear in your documentation what the issue it and that if the author or anyone else who has succeeded to the copyright wishes them removed you will do so. This is the common sense view rather than the legal one (and I am not a lawyer!!!). Some people may disagree with this view.

Hi,

For the library objects, in general it is not a good idea to include the library BGL and textures in your own package. It is better to ask the users to download the library (just as you did).

Else there is the risk of having the same library active multiple times (especially with common Rwy12 libraries) and that can result in all kind of trouble.

OK, so probably the best approach is to tell users to download the related libraries apart.

Thanks for your views.

That is certainly the preferred way to do it.
