• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi!

Real air released its Decathlon 3 or 4 years ago, with the most amazing gauge I've ever seen.

I tried to get some information about "smooth gauges" but this is pretty hard to find...

Nobody found their secret ?

It's nothing more complicated that building the gauge elements in the 3d model, and embedding the XML scripts in the model during the compile process.

Many, many freeware and payware companies use the same technique in their releases. :D

Why are there only a few companies making 100% smooth gauges ?

It has always been hard to figure out for me why FS can display more than 100 FPS while flying and not render more than (about) 15 FPS gauges...

the 2d gauge slow update is more a designer issue rather than sim issue :)
If you use more than 1 or 2 Vcockpit entries in the panel.cfg then gauge updates suffer.3d gauges are easy in fsx but a bit of a pain in fs9 as fsx is all Keyframe generated.Anyway pop over to http://www.aerodynamika.com
there is prob every possible 3d gauge mentioned,you will have to use the search function as the fs9 stuffs getting pretty buried.There are a lot of freeware aircraft out that already use a majority of 3d gauges.............. most of mine do :)

By the way, I tested FSX gauges and I didn't see any differences with FS9.

Actually, yes... 3d gauges take considerably longer to develop and test...

As for why they aren't done more often, blame that on the insistence of the MAJORITY of simmers for retaining the 2d panel system...

...as well as a fully-functional, interactive virtual cockpit.

To accomplish both goals AND have "smooth gauge technology" in the VC would require constructing TWO completely separate gauge systems... :eek:

In all honesty we couldn't have made 2D panels that were as clear or smooth in gauge animation as these 3D panels.

I wouldn't use the word "can't" as it really depends on the skills of the gauge programer. Understand there's a huge difference between a modeler who builds gauges using pre-written XML scripts and a professional programmer who writes efficient code for compiled gauges.
 
In my limited experience it is indeed the number of subpanel sections in the VC (as mentioned above) that really affects the smoothness of the 2D XML gauges in the VC. I have grouped all the gauges (in various areas) into 2 gauge "texture sheets" and they are acceptably smooth. Another developer used 9 (yes, 9) separate sections (but fewer total gauges) and the VC gauges are a slide show.
