• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Resizing aircraft textures?

I have a payware aircraft from 2007 and I would like to create 'HD textures' from the current 1024 resolution dds textures.

Can someone give some advice on what to do and not to do?

Will resizing from 1024 to 2048/4096 always bring a better result or can resolution be lost in the process?

What type of texture would benefit most from such a resize and should all be resized the same?:

1. VC cockpit.
2. Aircraft frame.
3. Specular, night and bump.

Thanks
Michael

Unless you are willing to repaint those textures (not just resize them), you will gain very little by making them larger. You might try making them larger and using a Sharpen effect on them, but in my experience they look about the same as the original 1024 texture.

And the ones that would benefit most from increased resolution would be the exterior textures covering large areas (like fuselage, wings, etc.). I don't believe the VC gauge map textures will display at larger than 1024 resolution.

Hope this helps,

The whole point of HD textures is more detail.

However, you cannot add detail by simply making the canvas larger, all you will do is basically blow up every pixel into 4/16.

You would have to fill these 4/16 pixels per original pixel yourself, otherwise there will not be any difference.

Tom: I believe you can use 4096 textures in VC, the advantage in redoing VC textures from 1024*1024 to 4096*4096 is obvious, and might liven up an older VC nicely.

pfabian,

If the texture resolution in FSX is set to 4096 and the screen resolution is eg. 1920x1080, will a 1024x1024 texture not be 'stretched' anyway?

By adding more detail, do you mean resizing and then repainting?

Repainting would then be done on top of the existing repaint?

Thanks
Michael

Why would it be stretched? A texture is applied to a 3D surface as mapped. The graphic card then computes which pixel on the monitor should show what depending on eyepoint and model positions...

Personally I think creation and use of textures in FSX are hard to understand.

So many variables and so crucial to the overall result.
I believe many ppl can learn to make decent 3D models, but very few can create a texture that appears natural. Its an art-form.

Ok, I really should do a simple test to resize a simple model with 1024 textures and then repaint it to see it I get the desired HD effect.
