• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Since lastest patch if aerial image package is put in the game it crashes at airport

Sounds like a new finding of this issue. I do have such tiles in my CTD area, not really have solid prove of that. But it worth to report Zendesk, they may come up with go solution.
Yes it's worth a new report, maybe from one of you ? I already filled a zendesk report but it was 2 days ago, before I dig into the SDK terrain debug tools and came upon this. Don't hesite to link this thread, hopefully a dev from asobo will browse here and there on FSDevloper (they probably already do).

Hi mottoth : I added your aerial to the community folder and went to the area via gps coordinates. I got a CTD. I tried to do my own again with the newest SDK simple aerial and still get CTD unless I shutoff rolling cache and all other live data.
Not surprised, I had the feeling that those bugs are easily reproductible and rooted in the sim itself. Thanks for taking the time to do that testing.

I think there are three issues. One is related to the Rolling Cache. Another is related to the actual size of the CGL file. And yet another is a compiling issue related to the degradation of the Sim install.

I can make a small airport aerial and it works just fine. I could only do this after I repaired the sim, and rebooted. I do not have a Rolling Cache present, as that seems to interfere with the changes made during the development process. I tried to make a large ZBAD example. I can make it (although I needed to reboot the computer first!) and it loads in the sim, but I soon get a CTD.

Regarding ZBAD, I get a windows error log that shows:

Faulting application name: FlightSimulator.exe, version: 1.10.11.0, time stamp: 0x5fa4238d
Faulting module name: FlightSimulator.exe, version: 1.10.11.0, time stamp: 0x5fa4238d
Exception code: 0xc0000005

This is a memory access error. We either run out of memory, or somehow overrun an internal MSFS buffer.

OK, there's definitely something broken after SDK 0.6.0. I realised that I never upgraded the SDK after 0.6.0 and so far got no problem with aerial sceneries until that thing at ZBAD (which looks like something a bit different with bugged tiles in default terrain).
I upgraded yesterday my SDK to 0.7.1. And now I run into exactly the same issues as everyone else, currently working on a small airport (ZBDH) with "small" aerial CGL (82MB): the sim keeps crashing when I zoom in onto my project (worked fine 10 to 15 minutes the time to setup my runway, then zoomed in to place a windsock and tadam !).
I'm considering to rollback to 0.6.0 is it's still available somewhere for download.

The sim does the compiling. There's nothing in the SDK that controls how CGLs are made.

I forgot that, so I did the rollback... for nothing. Got back to v0.7.1 this morning.
Spent time to survey many locations where I have missing airports on my to-do list, and wrote down details about the stock aerial stuff: some places have no bing aerial, some have bing aerial up to LOD17, and some bing aerial up to LOD19. I suspect that we can 'safely' add secondary aerial (LOD19) over no-aerial or bing-LOD17-aerial, without any CTD, but adding LOD19 aerial over bing LOD 19 aerial seems to sometimes CTD when zooming on close enough to display the tile in LOD19. I'll test this theory over the next few days.

Any news on this item? I have a small aerial and crashes when loading into the airport. Why would this get changed...why would they break something that was working fine ??????????????? asobos method is absolutely confusing to me

The SDK states we must use zoom level 20.
The SDK (for now) compiles at LOD20 whatever the resolution of the source, and then also generates all LODs from 1 to 19.

Didn't test my 2 crashing aerial since the last update:
- I have no hope for the one at ZBAD location since the default bugged terrain tiles are still there
- I'll try the ZBDH site soon (where I had CTD when zooming in enough to trigger LOD19 imagery).

the fix I've found is to change the MSFS version in the .json file of the aerial image to the newest release build.....seems to fix the issue

Any news on this topic? I ran into this just an hour ago. Everything was working fine and all of a sudden it started to cause FS to crash. Nothing has changed as far as I know (no new build, no updates...). Disconnecting from the internet indeed seems to prevent FS from crashing, but that is not really a fix... I was recreating an airport that was deliberately blurred in Bingmaps, so I'm afraid it has something to do with that. However, it's still strange that it was working just fine for some days at least.

Filed a bug report but didn't receive an answer yet.

This may still be related to yesterday's outage, I was working on a project with aerial imagery at the time (worked fine before), and when the outage was over I wasn't able to load the project. Turning off Bing let's me keep working, fortunately, but I think it's just a matter of waiting for MS to fix it.

That seems to be the problem with ZBAD. I think the blurred areas are failures in the default aerial streaming, and these cause the CTDs. Everything is ok until you add aerial imagery to those areas.

Have exactly the same problem. Since Friday my cgl file no longer works. Everything has worked without problems for weeks, now MSFS is crashing. I'll wait until Tuesday to see if the worldupdate will provide a solution. Very frustrating...

You can continue work with the aerial if you disable the online streaming in MSFS, at least this was the case with ZBAD. It's a bug in the sim.

Yes thank you, I know that. I only have small areas with custom images, at the moment I just delete the CGL folder.
Since it suddenly stops working, the error must be due to the bing data. There was no update at msfs, only a windows update.

I think MSFS aerial data is changing on an ongoing basis via the stream from the server. Constantly updating.

I have the same problem with my aerials crashing at my 2 different current projects (OIIE & ZSHC). Never happened before.
