• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Sloping grass runways

Hi, it's my first time posting here. I'm one of those you could call new-generation simmer because I just learn things about FSX this year, so please bear with my ignorance.

I have ADE X and SbuilderX and so far I have been succeeded to create simple photoscenery airport. Then I want to challenge myself more. I want to create a sloped grass and dirt airstrips on the mountains.

I've read Wally Bob's tutorial about creating sloping runway but sadly I have zero skill with 3D modelling. As far I as can understand, Wally's technique is meant to remove the dirt effect using hardened poly. I don't need to remove that effect so I thought flatten the land with multiple altitude will do the trick. But somehow I simply can't get my plane on the ground all the time. There are spots where planes simply sink to the ground and crash.

And then I tried to create a simple sloped mesh on GMax but failed to make it work with SbuilderX. I dont understand things about duplicating my mesh and adding attach point, always failed on that step

I'm sure I missed something there but don't know what. Is there any solution to my problem, preferably one without any need of 3D skill? Or maybe any of you could give me a simplest way to make my mesh works using that called attach-point? And just for information, I use FreeMeshX to test my airport.

Thank you for at least reading (:

PS: english isn't my first language, sorry if there's any mistake

Hello, and welcome to the FSDeveloper community.

You can create CVX vector flattens for terrain mesh with ex: ADE and/or SBuilderX ...for nearly any ground surface shape:

As an example of using ADE to make Sloping Polygons, refer to the ADE9X English Manual: :teacher:

1.) Download ADE version 1.65 User Manual from the link at:

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/ade-version-1-65-english-manual-released.433288/

2.) In that PDF Document, Navigate to: - 9.2.7 Sloping Polygons (Pages 138+139)

In SBuilderX:

1.) Click Help > SBuilderX Help > Search Tab

2.) Enter the word "Slope", then Click "List Topics"

NOTE: "Working With Points, Lines and Polygons" = only hit returned on "List Topics" Search)

3.) Click "Working With Points, Lines and Polygons", then Click "Display"

4.) In SBuilderX Help right-side Window Pane, scroll down to "Set Altitude"

For more information on capturing existing elevation values from one's installed and loaded terrain mesh in FS when also running in a flight alongside SBuilderX, see:

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/elevation-capture-for-sbuilder-x.436879/

You can also make 3D models of ground surfaces in a 3D modeling app:

http://www.scenerydesign.org/2013/04/flattens-from-3d-objects/

...then use ModelConverterX (aka "MCX") first accurately Geo-reference it, then convert it to a "sloped flatten" as a CVX vector flatten for terrain mesh.

Either the FS default land class textures or custom photo-real land class textures will drape over a terrain mesh flatten as a mesh-clinging layer directly on the ground with an already-hardened attribute that your user aircraft can not "fall through".

Also, the above methods eliminate the need to create a platform for anything other than tunnels / viaducts / bridges.

You may wish to review the additional info linked via this thread:

Hope this helps you explore your options. :)

Thank you GaryGB!
Those are plenty of references. Let me take some time to read all of them when my time allows me.

I created the sloped runway with Ade, editing multiple vértices. and add the modeled ruway, I take the height of each vertex and apply to the modeled polygon, yes a lot of patience because never fit exactly to the terrain. the only skill here is the patience, but in my case deserved the effort because mesh was very distorted because the terrain.
