• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Strange Polygon Behaviour with Textures & Trees

I hope someone can help me out here, I've been trying to work out how the polygon features work.

Can one polygon be set for several tasks, i.e. exclude building, add ground textures and add vegetation?

So far, from what I've found is that that would be a resounding NO! If I create a polygon for ground textures, and then I add vegetation, the ground texture disappears and whatever Bing maps was showing prior to adding the ground texture now shows under the vegetation. Is that how it's supposed to be?

Likewise if I add a polygon to exclude buildings or whatever, I can't add ground textures to that same polygon. Can a polygon only handle one specific task?

I'm also needing to add a runway, but I'm having some difficulty. Basically I have three polygons in the one spot, one to exclude any trees from the landing area, another to add texture to the landing area, only because the exclude polygon won't accept any textures, and the actually runway itself with it's own texture.

The first two polygons seem to be working as they should, the third polygon, the runway, is hidden underneath all the other polygons, see attached pics. The first image shows the runway in position, the second one is to demonstrate how it's hidden under the other polygons.

I can see where you can give priority to a polygon, but that option doesn't seem to be available for the runway.

Any ideas how I can remedy this?

Thank you.

Cheers,
Alan

Polygons are now version 0.3.0 When we had 0.2.5 they were a lot more flexible. The version number is seen in the shapefile's DBF file.

I'm not sure why polygons were downgraded. This is the first time anyone mentioned this problem with them. Not sure why you would try to make a runway with a polygon.

G'day Dick, thanks for your reply, I appreciate the explanation. So I suppose there's no option other than to use separate polygons for different tasks instead of expecting one polygon to be able to do several things :P

As for the runway I have actually created the runway as a runway object (see attached pic), I just don't know how to get it to sit above the polygons, to give it priority 🧐

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Cheers,
Alan

You could attach an XML of the airport and we can look at it. Attach it as a zip file or as .txt

Thanks. Not sure which xml you need to check against so I've attached a couple with their specific path locations included in the zip.

The first one is from "\PackageDefinitions", the second is from "\PackageSources\sceneries"

We would need the airport scenery xml with the polygons that are in error. Or zip the entire package with the polygons.

I think your only solution would be to make overlapping polys so they don't intersect the runway. This is an airfield that doesn't exist in the sim? I see you are trying to cover over a residential area with the polys. Polys are good for exclusions and biomes, but aprons seem to work better for covering areas of the aerial imagery.
Another idea is to replace the aerial image tiles themselves.

It used to be a runway quite a few years ago, it's where I did my flying training. There's still remnants of it but the residential area I've covered encroaches on what used to be one of the runways, a dirt strip. So no, it's a runway that does not exist in the sim.

I haven't learnt about aprons yet, I was getting to that for when it came time to create them for where the parking areas will be :)

I'll redo the polys so they don't interfere with the runway. I did actually do that on a previous attempt, but that one failed. For some weird reason the SDK decided to delete all my polys I had set up. The only reason I can think of is if perhaps there was some sort of conflict and it crashed the SDK :p

Replacing the area image tiles sounds like it could be a better solution, but I have no idea what they are or even where to start with that :p

I wish there was a way to change an ICAO code in FS2020. I don't how they stuffed it up, but there seems to be quite a few airports in flight sim with the wrong ICAO codes. To create this airport I had to give it a dodgy ICAO of YCRB, the actual code is YCOB, but for some stupid reason in flight sim that code is allocated to Coober Pedy, which is in actual fact YCBP, nothing like YCOB 🤪

Knowing how badly they've messed that up explains why quite often when I enter an ICAO code into field in the Dev Mode to jump to a particular airport I end up in the middle of absolutely nowhere 😖 The mind boggles how they could bugger that up 🧐

Anyway, the pics below are of the airfield when it was in use and how it is today...
