• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Strange problems with my current project

Hi Guys,

I just hit a strange problem with my current project and hope someone can spot where I went wrong. BTW I am using ADE v1.26.

This first shot shows a corner of my project airport.....

The two areas marked are 'land class' polygons with the appropriate 'tags' and beneath both are 'exclude general' polygons (of similar shape and size) with the 'tag' of 'Everything'.

For reference, the upper background image is a shot from Google Earth so that I could lay out the runways, taxiways, roads etc. and the lower image is a shot taken from FSX so that I could see the location of the coastline and the course of the river that marks the edge of the nearest town.

After I had added the polygons above I compiled the airport and went into FSX to check it out....

As you can see the two areas appear to display as they should at first glance. However, if you zoom out you start to see a problem....

I have a straight edged extension of land that has suddenly appeared in the sea!

If you zoom even further out the problem gets worse as it looks like the entire tile is affected (BTW FSX flips the orientation as you zoom out which is why you see the sudden change in viewing angle)......

I can only think the problem might be the 'exclude general' polygon but thought I would ask here first before messing any further in case anyone had seen a similar instance. What I was trying to do was exclude the general FSX autogen in the area so that it wouldn't interfere with my land class additions.

Can anyone confirm my theory or point out what I did wrong and how to correct it.

Thanks for looking.

OK I will try that. Seems odd that it should affect the sea when the I made sure the polygon was inside the coast line.

As I recall this type of Exclude affects rectangular areas (QMID11 or 13 I think depending on the type of exclude) this means if your exclusion polygon intersects or covers several then they will all have stuff excluded

That's right. It looks like it has excluded the entire QMID11-sized waterpoly, which is expected behavior.

You'll have to fill back in the affected area with a new water poly of your own making, that entirely covers the affected area.

You ought to use TMFViewer to load in the default bgl file to see what and why this happened. TMFViewer will show you the stock waterpoly boundaries and in so doing, you won't ever be surprised about what gets excluded or not.

Thanks for the replies guys. With your help I was able to sort out my problem as you can see.

I was even able to make the river mouth look more like it does in real life.

I can now concentrate on making all the building and static aircraft models I need to populate the airfield and with a bit of luck by the time those are complete I will be able to place the custom objects with ADE instead of messing around the way I am now! :)

@Mace
I tried running TMFViewer after reading your post but unfortunately it wouldn't open the stock bgl file for the airfield I was modifying for some strange reason.

TMFViewer will not open airport data bgl files. Those are files with "apx" in their filename.

What you need to open and view is a cvx******.bgl file :) because the cvx bgl's are the ones that store the waterpoly data.

If you load the corresponding stock cvx bgl file, it will load and display in TMFViewer, and you'll be able to see the stock waterpoly boundaries--this will show you why your exclude destroyed such a large area.

Thanks Mace, I opened a succession of cvx**** files until I found the right one and it looks like the water poly boundary is over the land in a couple of places for some reason. Not to worry as I found a work-around that gives me acceptable results for now.
