FS2004 Textures not loaded when loading model

I'm working on a terminal model for an FS2004 project. i'm coming out of Blender in 3ds format and loading into MCX version 1.9.2026.0903 in 3ds format. MCX does not load the two textures because their names or over 8 characters long(Picture 1). I fix this by opening the material editor, selecting the texture tab, selecting the two unloaded textures then saving them in png formatPicture 2). The textures are now loaded(Picture 3). I then export the model as an FS model. Makemdl does not care about the long names. The model works fine in FS2004. Is there any way that MCX can load the long named textures initially without me using the material editor and saving them? Thanks for your help.

3ds format does not support long file names, so the renaming is a necessary annoyance.

Thanks for the info Tom. In the future I must remember to keep my filenames short. The 3ds format gives me the least problems with the model load into MCX. That's why I use it.

It's indeed a restriction of the 3ds format that it only supports 8.3 names. Long named are then truncated to ~1, ~2, etc. As long as all textures were present before export they should usually resolve correctly.

Else I would suggest using a more modern format than 3ds.
