• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Un-smooth model

Hi,
I get an entire lib with all model's faces smoothed by error.
Is there a way to bulk un-smooth / de-smooth the models using MCX or do i have to fix each and every model with Gmax/3Dmax ?

Best wishes to all

Hi,

MCX does not have such a feature at the moment, but it is probably something I could add relatively quickly.

I'll see if I can add something tomorrow.

I guess the reverse operator to smooth an object that is not smoothed might also be useful sometimes :)

Yes, very useful. :)

If it could be done part by part in the Hierarchy Editor that would be even better.

That might a good idea. But also part of the batch wizard.

Hi,

I have the new function to MCX now. The new development release will be online in about 15 minutes.

You can do flat and smooth shading now. The smooth shading algorithm is maybe a bit crude as it is applied to all vertices of a model part. Maybe I can improve it by including a cut-off angle or so.

You can access the new feature from 3 places:
  • In the special tools menu for the entire object
  • At batch operator in the batch convert wizard for the entire object
  • In the hierarchy editor per model part. In that case you need to right click on the "# triangles" label to get the menu.

Hi Arno:

As you may know Sketchup and other 3D modeling applications use a smoothing angle value between adjacent Faces of about 20 -22 Degrees.

It would be very useful to have the ability to make a variable adjustment to a 3D model via MCX for selected group of Faces / ModelParts.

Many thanks for your innovation of this type of enhancement in MCX. :)

Hi Gary,

Like I wrote the smoothing is a bit crude at the moment. It might indeed be a good idea to have a setting for a maximum angle between faces to apply the smoothing. That why not all polygons will become smooth shaded, but for example the top of a cylinder would keep a hard edge. I'll see if I can improve the shading later, I was happy I could put something in for now.

Hi Arno,

Great! Yes, an angle cutoff one could set would be helpful.
