• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

FSX Unwrap UVW Issue

I have encountered a problem UVW mapping a tyre side wall in Gmax, I UVW mapped it, created a template with LithUnwrap & then a texture bitmap, I applied the material to the tyre side wall but was misaligned so I applied a unwrap uvw modifier & realigned with the texture, but when I viewed it in MCX it was still misaligned the same as before I applied the unwrap modifier.

Above is how it looks in Gmax & how it looks in MCX.

I would appreciate any advice with fixing this.

Having edited the UVW, did you then export a fresh model version for viewing in MCX?

You can view your results in Gmax too, y'know.

Was thinking the same thing Tom....God knows how many times I had fixed something only to find out I forgot to copy it over into FS...

Yes, I compiled a new model & I always delete the old model before compiling a new one as I have experienced problems overwriting a current model, it looked perfectly aligned in Gmax but not so in MCX (ModelConverterX). It seems strange that with all my previous models I have made with Gmax (FS9 & FSX) I have never encountered texture alignment issues, I would UVW map, create a template with LithUnwrap, make a texture using the template & apply the material without any alignment problem. Previously while mapping a different part of this model in my Gmax FSX version I first came across this alignment problem, so I mapped it in my Gmax FS9 setup & merged into my Gmax FSX without any problem, I tried mapping the tyre side wall in Gmax FS9 & had the same alignment issue. Before I tried the unwrap uvw I just moved the uvw gizmo to get the texture aligned but that didn't work.

This is the first time I have used unwrap uvw, as the Gmax help document does not go into too much detail with regard to unwrap uvw modifier, is it just a case of adding an unwrap uvw modifier above the UVW Mapping modifier, selecting edit, editing & then closing the Edit UVWs window, I far as I know collapsing the stack is not necessary, but I tried it with & without the stack collapsed.

I really appreciate everyone's help with this.

Problem Solved!!!

It turns out that it was GIMP 2.8 which I use was for some reason the problem, I did a reinstall & resaved the texture I had previously made & reapplied the material to the tyre side wall & it lined up perfectly.

Panic over!!

Note that only true 24 bit BMP images will display correctly in GMAX. Other BMP formats often appear mialigned.
