• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

What is MCX

I guess I need to know this if I'm going to use some different aircraft.

Arno's ModelConverterX is a custom FS utility, with a dedicated forum at FSDEV ...here:

Please explain what you mean by "I guess I need to know this if I'm going to use some different aircraft."

Were you planning to create new custom P3Dv6 aircraft, or instead, create new texture liveries etc. for existing P3Dv6 aircraft ?

And regarding 'P3Dv6 aircraft', which type: user-pilot-able, or AI Traffic ?

ModelConverterX is a tool that you can use to convert models between different formats, for example to convert it from one FS version to another. So in general you will only need it if you are a developer and are making your own content. Some people also use it as a tool to preview repaints they are making.

I am thinking about making my own AI Aircraft.

It depends on the tools you use. If you use the official SDK gamepacks and exporters you can do it without MCX as well. If you want to make your own model you need to use a 3D editing tool for sure.

Where can I find a 3D editing tool?

Most people are either using blender or sketchup, these days.

I would like to make some AI Aircraft for myself (just to see if I can do this) and then possibly upload them to AVSIM.
If you want to make your own aircraft you need one of the 3D design tools.
The "original" tool was GMax, supplied in the "Extras" sub-directory of one of the original FS2004 installation CDs, if I remember correctly.
Cryptic and comprehensive ... many on-line tutorials were available.
I found FSDS (Flight Simulator Design Shop) easier to use, but the publishers (Abacus) are long gone, so if you're buying second-hand, make sure you get a serial number.
As has already been pointed out by @tgibson - "Most people are either using blender or sketchup, these days."
I've used neither, so can't comment.
Be prepared to invest some time, (days, not hours), becoming familiar with the tool(s) you choose to use ... then once you've "built" your 'plane you can learn how to paint it and then actually make it fly realistically ;)
Good luck.
