• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Where do I Put the Google Server Tiles?

Hi Ken:

Your "Shuttlesworth Airport.kml" imported into Sketchup-v8 without prompts or errors on (2) different computers, each with a different version of Ruby installed:

* Ruby 1.9.3-p545

* Ruby 2.0.0-p481-x64

Have you configured the Sketchup-v8 Start menu shortcut so it is being "Run as Administrator" ? :scratchch

Hi Gary,

Well, I tried that and that does not make any difference. I right clicked on the Sketchup 8 icon shortcut on my desktop and clicked Run as Administrator. I'm still getting the error prompts. I was wondering if it could be something I'm doing in creating this file but I guess if that was the case, it would not have imported on your system. Did you see the satellite view of the KBHM airport? When I installed the plugin, I did it from inside Sketchup by using the Install extension button. I assume I did it correctly. I don't understand why I'm getting these prompts if I did everything correctly, and I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

At this point, I think you two would be better off using private messaging, rather than the forum resources. I'll give it a day, then I'm locking this meandering thread.

Why do you find it necessary to lock this thread out? I'm trying to get help with issues.

Hi Ken:

I am inclined to agree that this thread went off-topic due to a (only very indirectly related) digression resulting from your asking questions related to Sketchup in the SBuilder forum ...here: :pushpin:

http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/where-do-i-put-the-google-server-tiles.440855/#post-779616

While I have begun to find it necessary recently to try and immediately alert some folks who tend to interject digressions on a sub-topic that is "not reasonably closely related' to the primary topic already under discussion within an existing thread, sometimes, due to limited personal available time, and sometimes due to the lateness of the hour after a long day, I might overlook taking the initiative to convey a "heads-up" to someone that it would be best to divert an impromptu question into a separate thread and/or into a different forum.

[EDITED]

Apparently I overlooked conveying a "heads-up" at the point a digression began in this thread.

Apparently I did convey a "heads-up" at the point a digression began in this thread. :stirthepo

Hi Ken:

This latter issue should otherwise be regarded as a different sub-topic to be posted separately in the Sketchup forum.

IIUC, you have installed KML Tools by Aerilius into Sketchup v2017. :scratchch

FYI: KML Tools was recommended to be used in Sketchup version-8, as AFAIK, it has not yet been updated for the newer version of Ruby used in v2017. :pushpin:

KML Tools may / may not work OK in v2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and may / may not have caused issues with "3-Pts. Tools Loader." :alert:

[END_EDIT]

But I also think there is a responsibility on the part of all forum participants for building the "knowledge base" that can be fulfilled via discussion of sub-topics in a way that allows more focused exploration of a subject within its own separate thread ...which may also make it easier to find that subject via a Search conducted here at FS Developer and/or via ex: Google. :twocents:

Certainly SBuilderX may be used to generate background images that can be imported into Sketchup and used for creating multiple 3D scenery objects and/or G-Polys within a project area less than 1 Kilometer x 1 Kilometer in size.

However, for creation of only a single building footprint ...via the Sketchup "geolocation workaround" recently discussed elsewhere within the Sketchup forum, Google Earth is used ...not SBuilderX.

On that basis (although the sub-topic technically has it own merits), that topical discussion should properly be done in a separate thread started within the Sketchup forum, as this is a digression on a sub-topic of how to export KML lines from Google Earth and import them into Sketchup using a plugin Ruby script, and IMHO, should not be addressed via an impromptu discussion incidental to an existing thread on a different topic within the SBuilder forum.

At this point, I shall prefer to reply to your latter question quoted above regarding ex: "Sketchup Import of Google Earth KML Lines", via a new thread that you can start within the Sketchup forum on this specific sub-topic (with quoted replies from the latter "digression" part of this thread if appropriate) ...subject to the following consideration:

Threads are generally regarded as open for participation with posting by all forum members; so if you have a question that you wish to have me answer by citing my forum name, be aware that by posting in a public forum, you may also receive replies by other forum participants. ;)

Also, since my personal available free time is rather limited, and since I believe we can all learn and help one another more effectively via public forum discussions, I typically do not engage in communication via Private Messaging "conversations" on a frequent- or extended- basis, as I prefer that all forum participants have the opportunity to gain- and contribute- insights in an open forum thread.

See you in your new thread, which I believe you would wish to start if you are genuinely interested in troubleshooting this "Sketchup geolocation workaround" recently discussed elsewhere within the Sketchup forum which uses the plugin Ruby script "KML Tools" by Aerilius ...in Sketchup-v8.

PS: Lets just say that would be more conducive to "Googliness". :D

Hi Gary,

I didn't really realize that I went off topic, and I do agree that I need to create a new thread. Yes, it's much better to keep everything organized so that answers can be easily found. Tell Dick that after I create the new thread that he can move those discussions concerning the kml error messages over to that thread if he wants. Or, since there's a delete button, I guess I could copy and move those discussions over to the new thread, if that helps. Then I can delete those discussions in this thread. I'm glad y'all brought it up because I didn't even realized it, and would prefer that subjects stay on topic. I'll try to remember that next time. I'll create the new thread later.
