• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Win10 upgrade nightmare

Awful networking has been a Windows staple since the very beginning. If you get a Windows version that can be easily connected over networks, you might want to check your pulse or get piched.
Well, I currently have four Win7 machines, one Win98 machine and a Win95 machine fully networked seamlessly. The newest computer running a factory installed Win10 is not so well integrated.

Heck, I can even run programs across the network! I have successfully run Max9 from one of my networked computers, as well as Photoshop CS2. :p

As a single OS on a single PC, Win10 all good, as long as you know how to manipulate it. In profession, upgrading SW on ships, Win10 and 7 is a no-go. Seismic ships use Unix. Been there seen that, bullet proof.

I'm still puzzled why anyone would control hardware - huge and expensive hardware, for that matter - from Windows.
Save the licensing fees, hire a bunch of nerds and get a complete UNIX solution.

From my experience - NEVER do the Win10 "upgrade" - do the fresh install - every machine I attempted the "upgrade" on - I eventually had to go back and do a clean Win10 install to rectify all the issues they had...

Good advice.
I've only upgraded from 7 to 10 to extract the product key and create an installation medium. After that, I've completely reinstalled.

With 7, 98 and 95, you've had more than enough time to make them work properly. :p

We never could get folder sharing to work when on LAN parties back in the day, so we usually resulted to external tools.

My question is if i were to buy a Windows 7 pro key and download the installation. And then can i upgrade from Windows 7 Home Edition to Pro and keep all my programs installed like 3DS MAX?
This must only update the operating system and not my setup.

Back in the day I had Win7 Home and bought an upgrade to Ultimate. It installed without messing anything but where you’d get an upgrade these days I dunno - mine was the online, direct from MS version.

Win7 only has a bit over a year to go before support ends so I can’t think of a good reason to hang on desperately to it. Hardware support is fading too, so any new hardware may not run it properly. :twocents:

I don't mind also upgrading to W10. You can buy keys for both on Ebay for under $20.
The question i have now is when i buy W10 it will offer a choice to upgrade and keep my system active not just keep the files in a folder right?

Why not just mirror everything first and then try it. Rollback if it isn't acceptable, it's really the only reliable solution when it comes to Microsoft. They refuse to take any liability and on that basis tech support can only ever just be a cover for damage control, since there is no real competition to force it to serve as a sales tool.

It is possible, using the Update Assistant from MS afaik. Once you’ve upgraded, make sure your install is tied to a Microsoft account (yeah, I know, big brother) and any subsequent reinstall just needs logging in to that account to activate all over again. You can also install on a new machine without buying a new license for it. although not too many times. My current rig uses the license from the last rig that died.

Ok after adding 16 more gigs of memory to my original 16 gigs i found Windows 7 home will not go higher than 16 gigs. Then this morning my new 1T SSD would not start even with repair. So i took my 2 month ago image copy and that ran fine proving the new memory was not the issue. Just was strange timing when my new drive OP got corrupted. So i updated my backup and updated my image copy. Then made a new image copy on new 1T SSD and upgraded to Windows 10. Now all 64 Gigs work.

But i have a new issue. FSX will not activate. So i ran the regedit and updated PartMgr and then it worked. Then the ACC would ask over and over after i unplug the internet. So i repaired with no luck then un installed and FSX then FSX would ask to activate if the internet is unplugged. If the internet is on it's fine. So i am re installing the FSX and ACC. What a joke!

But happy with W10 with 64 gigs and the FPS is friendly in FSX.:p

And yes the answer is you can upgrade from W7 W8 to W10 using the same key you own. The W10 is home edition. The key i purchased on Ebay for $5 will only work for a fresh install so i am saving it for my new gaming computer i am building this Winter.:stirthepo

When it comes to installing 3ds Max on the new rig, use the Portable Licence Utility to transfer your licence key to the new rig. Works great, unless more recent versions use some other method.

Since i upgraded i did not have to install 3ds which is what i wanted because of my detailed installation. But i did have to use the portable license utility to re activate it. I also have 2016 which is the last year you can use offline.

What is going on. I did a fresh install of FSX and activated online then it restarts with no issues until i unplug the internet. Why do i need the internet on? What is the issue?

Update:
i used the phone option and it worked. So what is with the online option? Why does it work while online then re ask once offline?

New issue with Windows 10. If i run my Gmax and select open file "Look In" The entire program locks up. History and directories are ok.

Gmax is responding to a preset directory path that was changed with the update. You need to erase that old path and allow Gmax to create a new one. Maybe find a .ini file or reinstall.

Making a new ini file makes sense. And it worked. Thanks.

Update:

Making a new ini file works because gamepacks is not linked up. Once you add the "FSX_GmaxGamePacks\plugins" folder to configure paths "FSX" under "Plug-ins" then the issue comes back. Never happens in windows 7.
The only solution so far that works is to open the material navigator first then the "Open File" directory "look-in" will work without freezing.:stirthepo

Now with this new information can someone help? Someone must use Gmax on W10.:banghead:

You're starting GMax from the preconfigured shortcut within the gamepack folder (adapted to your GMax folder's path), right?

Yes i use the FSX_Gmax shortcut. I know how to setup Gmax properly. The issue is W10.

I think the reason i have this issue and other may not is because i use the FSX box version with a separate Acceleration box version and not the FSX box that includes ACC.
This causes the online registration to not work when using W10 and i must call in and use the offline method (Even if you update the registry tutorial) to make it work register. So again i think the W10 and this original ACC version causes this issue.

I don't quite understand. The installed FSX version has absolutely nothing to do with the GMax gamepack functionality.

FSX has nothing to do with Gmax but the SDK does and its included with FSX as Sp1 on your cd. But i do not use SP1 or SP2 i use ACC from another box. The gold FSX comes with ACC.
This older version ACC SDK might be the cause of why Gmax is having issues while using W10.

So what SDK are you using for gmax as it did come with FSX or ACC. So yes it does effect Gmax. FSX_GamePack comes from the SDK.
