• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

wind turning runway indicator

Hi,

Trying in vain to use (in FS9) this windsock (Windsock_animated).
1. Change the coords ("51 12.11" and "2 51.58" or should it be "N51 12.11" and "E2 51.58" ?).
2. Made a new xml file and then compiled it together with the MDL in de Compiler folder. Got a .bgl and placed that in airport/scenery + bitmap into airport/texture map.
3. Placed the file twice: Windsock_calm_animat1.bgl and so on for medium and high and a second windsock Windsock_calm_animat2.bgl, and so on...

Nothing to see. Did I perhaps something wrong or missed a step ?

Hi José,

Your coordinates should work either way you've stated them, though. Some questions:

- do other objects in that scenery folder show up in the sim?
- do you compile these other objects yourself in the same way?
- are their coordinates almost the same as your object?
You can try placing your object at N0* W0* and see if it shows up there...

Jon

Hi,

I will try to locate the second windsock further away from the initial one.

I had no problems with other objects placed the same way as the windsock.

Hi,

Have now the windsock in my scenery. :)

Was searching the txt-file in order to make the changes in the coords. And as I didn't find it directly, I made a search and discovered an API I made before with Library Creator XML (I thought I didn't made the API because I saw no activity or confirmation an API was made... :p).
Have now placed the windsock on two different locations far from eachother and they are looking well ! Although it is only the calm-version... hope the other ones do not interfere. Is there a special way to make it work or will it work automatically ?

Thanks to the author Jdberg who made a fine looking windsock. :D

Greetz. José.

Hi,

Did a little test: I sat the weather to stormy weather and there was no windsock calm to see. When I returned to fair wather, the windsock calm appeared ... as it should.
So, have to place 3 API's on the (nearly) same location.

Yahoo ! :D

Greetz. José.

Excellent, José.

I haven't used API's, but with XML placement the three different models (for different wind speeds) should appear with a single placement of the .mdl file.

Jon

Hi,

This windsock is amazing... and Jdberg is too humble to discribe the windsock as it appears in the scenery: fine work... good looking and it moves in the wind like a real one !

Thanks again. José.

Isn't it cool, Jörg did a great job! Glad it worked out ...

Note at rare times it may vibrate at high speed when the wind is calm, but that's rare.

Humm, why are you placing different models for different wind conditions? In the end we tweaked the whole windsock so that it is only one MDL with all the fun inside.

Looks in the downloads section of the website, under scenery design and then in the objects category. There you find the total tweaked MDL that Joerg, Jon and I made.

Hi Arno,

Because... I see not clear what I have to handle your files and to get an API. :(
Tried to put the three xml-files all together, but I only see the windsock_high-animat object.

Hi,

By the way... in FS2004 the stack of the windsock is white, but in FSX SP2 it is black.
Can that be helped ? It is not so dramatic you know... :p

Greetz. José.

Hi,

Seems I have found the way to make one file (API) who contains all three windsocks settings. :)

However there is a slightly difference of scale and reacting under the same weatherconditions (betweean de tweaked model and the original one).

Have tested calm and high, but which weather theme gives me a medium wind ? It reacts with FSMeteo, but at this time there is a strong wind and very cold, hà or better... brrrrr.

Rotate to follow wind direction

Hi,

After reading everything I found about tweaking an object to follow the wind direction, I am confused:

Does MDL Tweaker (the latest) actually make an object point into the wind?

I know the two-objects-on-screen thing, and I did that, but I can't make it work.

I created two identical objects with gmax (a pointy stick), inside gmax gave them different names, exported twice with different names, then tweaked them with MDL Tweaker telling it to Rotate with wind, placed the objects with ObPlacer (in FS2004) and nothing, not even a hurricane made them change directions.

The MDL Tweaker is working, because I tweaked one of the same objects to rotate to user and it works, no problem.

Any hints? (Neither one of the objects has any animation, they are both just a box with a pointy end.)

If you are curious, the airport I used to use in Sundridge has a large illuminated weather vane, and I'd like to make one and place it there.

Thanks

Fern

Hi,

Yes it should work with MDL Tweaker. But not for animated objects.

Won't turn with wind

Hi, Arno and all

Well, still can't make this turn with the wind.

I am doing everything for FS9, so there is no gamepack problems.

Attached is a zip with

* the gmax file for the object, a pointy box.
* two separate mdls, numbered 1 and 2
* the two separarte mdls tweaked with MDL Tweaker II 2.0.266
* the xml file created by ObPlacer with the two mdl tweaked objects
* the bgl created with ObPlacer, locating the two objects side by side at the Kamarang airport SYKM (out of the beaten path, I do a lot of testing there...)

Before exporting from gmax I even changed the name of the box in gmax, to make sure that wasn't the problem.

What am I missing?...

Thanks

Fern

Hi Fern,

It seems the MDL files have been tweaked correctly. But I am not sure why it is not working. I tried it in FSX (don't have FS2004 installed anymore), but it is also not working there. Strange, as far as I know it should still work.

Let me see if I can find some other object that is working. There must be some limitation here that we are forgetting.
