• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Windshield rain effect

I spent a few hours today trying to get rain effects on my VC windshield..
I have made a few in fs2004. But I can't seem to get anything to work in fsx.
I checked a few default aircraft and found they only have rain effect on the 2D panel.

here is what i did. I attached VCRainStopped0000 and VCRainMoving0000
to 2 windows. i named the textures Animate_VCRainMoving_01 and Animate_VCRainStopped_01.

I used the texture config to avoid using textures in my project.

So I am wondering is there an fx_effect i need to attach.
FS9 did not need an effect attach except visibility.

I must be missing a step! Please Help:confused:

What you are missing is that FSX does not support chained animation files, so the FS9 version of "vc rain" is impossible.

Those few models that have "vc rain" are using a custom scripted XML system and use their own, custom designed textures.

Bill is right, but you can copy your FS9 rain textures into your FSX texture folder and use a native FS9 plane like the default B737-400 in FSX and you will then have rain in the vc in FSX.

FSX native models dont support rain in the vc but FS9 models do.

I have four planes from FS9 that work well in FSX for the time i feel like flying with rain in the vc in fsx.

I wouldn't dream of sacrificing the high detail possible in an FSX model just for the sake of "vc rain drops."

Bill, other than normal and specular bitmaps (and larger textures), what advantages do FSX models have? With the new Unlimited MDL compiling technique for FS9 models, they can be more complex than FSX models.

The larger texture problem can be overcome by using more 1024x1024 textures.

Simplicity in compiling for one thing. Having watched/read of Bill's problems with ULE, I simply don't have time for that level of frustration and angst. ;)

The fs9 mdl in fsx deal breaker for me is the issues with glass and prop textures...There is plenty of scope for some awesome effects in fsx with the ambient xml tags stil being there.....just wish they had one(xml tag) for being in a cloud :D

Yeah that ended up being a red herring :)
It will trigger when you pass through a cloud layer zone rather than a single cloud (well in my tests anyway)

Well, it's good enough for sunglasses.

(Who takes off his/her sunglasses when in a single cloud anyways?)
