• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Won't create MDL file

Please disregard post below as I have found that the XtoMDLPath was incorrect. When I changed it my MDL file is created HOWEVER it appears to be too small (10K).
Also I thought that SDE could import MDL objects into its library for use wit5hin the application but it can only import BGL files so now I need to find out what next to do. The doc mentioned below seems a little simplistic.
I will add a post to the ADE forum for this question.

Let me start by saying that as I am completely new to creating scenery objects I have been following doc file named Build your house for Microsoft Flight Simulator X Using Google SketchUp written by Arno Gerretsen.
I have created my object using SketchUp and imported it (DAE) into MelConverterX, 'mass renamed' and converted my textures (JPG) into DDS files (no problems so far) and then attempted to create my .MDL file. I select EXPORT and select 'FSX MDL object' then click on SAVE but NOTHING happens (no MDL file is created in the folder I selected). I can't even find a log to read to see what is going wrong.
I checked OPTIONS > EXPORTER SETTINGS and find that MakeMDLPath is set to c:\fs2004 sdk\makemdl sdk\makemdl.exe and I'm sure that this is the problem as I have FSX (and SDK) installed. Yet I cannot find makemdl.exe anywhere on my system
Can anyone assist please?
Thanks

How to use my scenery object in ADE.

I have created a scenery object using Sketchup and converted it into an FSX MDL file using ModelConverterX as per a doc I found named Build your house for Microsoft Flight Simulator X Using Google SketchUp written by Arno Gerretsen.

When I attempt to use my scenery object in ADE it seems that I need a BGL file not an MDL file.

Where am I going wrong?

In ADE:

To add a model to your project: Lists > Models. In the dialog use the Add button to add your mdl file.

To place it: Right Click > Add > Model and select your model to add.

Alternatively you can put your mdl file into a library using Library Creator XML. You then add the library to ADE via Tools > Library Object Manager. The advantage of this method is that you only need to tell ADE once about your object. If you add the model directly then you will need to do that for each project you use the model in.

I either case make sure that you add any textures used into the scenery folders. For the mdl they need to go into the texture folder that matches the scenery folder you put the compiled airport in. In the case of a library they need to go into the texture folder that matches the scenery folder you put the library in.
