• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

File Sharing Options

Hi all.

I have found an interesting file sharing\storage website. It is free for 10GB and it allows private or public file access. It also allows direct linking urls to be used... letting us share large files if needed. ( Sometimes including source files helps others to solve the problems you have ):

Minus

You can also use it for screenshot examples, etc...

If you have a favorite file sharing option, or a criticism of a sharing site, feel free to add it here.

Dick

A very reliable source for file sharing is the skydrive available from Windows Live:

Windows Live

The file access is odd as there is no direct linking to the files, but a direction to the webpage that allows downloading.

I also use ImageShack for direct linking and storage of pictures:

ImageShack

I use free web hosting ( not for file storage, but for a website home ) at x10hosting:

For uploading images, I prefer imgur. Simple and to the point.

Edit: Oh, and also, I'd like to add that SkyDrive is underrated- really a good product, and often ignored.

I use SkyDrive. It is very reliable. I think you can store files up to 100MB now... 25 GB total storage.

Google is set to release Google Drive next week... 5GB storage for free. No word on maximum file size or if direct-links are allowed.

Minus allows direct linking ( if not abused.. ), 10GB and up to 2GB file sizes. Whole folders can be downloaded as zips. It's not perfect, but it has some good features. I don't know how secure it would be for sensitive files, or how long they will be in business... but for direct linking source files for problems brought ot this sight it would work well. Often a member will post a problem that should have source files attached ( images, INFs, models, SBX files... )

Here's a elevation BGL I store at Minus:

DEM4h20_7.bgl

I'm always asking members to attach source files because many times the problems are simply resolved, but the terminology used by members varies because of experience levels or language differences. Source files, FLT saves, and images all help resolve problems quickly.

Thanks for extremely worthwhile info.
I do include all developer files (ADE, MDL, Skp, etc.) and intend to continue doing it in my upcoming (freeware) releases as well together with a huge 'thank you' to all the people on FSDeveloper that helped me out.
Unfortunately I do not have been able to upload to skydrive as I do not have the hang of it yet (seems a bit more complicated than I thought).

Roby (but without PSses for once)

Well that's rather ironic... I'm getting this when going to your Minus link, Dick.

Ironic or not, I do get a download from the above link. ???

Maybe it is some weird bandwidth issue. What browser do you use... I use firefox.

Also, I'm not a minus fan, and I'm not defending them. I seriously would like us to find free (or very cheap) and reliable solutions to allow file-sharing between members and for posts on the forum.

Hi,

If the current upload limit on the forum is too low, we might be able to increase it as well. Disk space is not such an issue on the current server. Although we can never offer gigabytes of space.

Hi Arno.

That's good to know. At times, especially with photoreal scenery, source files can get huge.

Newer members often post: I have a problem with SBuilder... my blendmask... how do I...

And the truth is without source files, we have little understanding of just what they are asking. Besides file-sharing space, we need a bit of a cultural change as far as new members:

Attach your source files!

Dick

Hi Dick,

I'll do some analysis to see how much space the attachments now take and how much we can increase it.

Another point is that some attachments should be removed after the file had been tried. Others have a value to keep much longer.

SkyDrive's Windows desktop client is now available, which provides easy Explorer integration, along with the ability to upload files up to 2GB. There are additional clients for Windows Phone, iOS and Mac OS X Lion.

New accounts are now limited to 7GB total capacity, with additional paid tiers. However, if you have an account that was created on or before the 22nd, you can opt back in to continue using your previous 25GB.

See the MSDN Building Windows 8 blog for more details: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/...d-storage-for-windows-available-anywhere.aspx.

Here are a few more:

Dropbox

Ge.tt

Jumpshare

Dropbox requires you to sign up for an account (free accounts begin at 2 GB, and are expandable through free space and referrals). In addition to its desktop synchronization client, you can have shared folders, and get direct links to files.

Ge.tt and Jumpshare are other services I've heard of, but haven't tried. They sound pretty good, though.

I agree with Rhumbaflappy about Skydrive, is reliable but the acces to the files are annoying, you have to expose all your stuff, no direct link and could be confusing as well, a detail that spoil a little this great site

My ImageShack account is getting rather full, so I was pleased to read about Minus. Thank you!

I am having a website at php-friends.de, they are free and offering up to 10gb space! (2gb for websites or 10gb for storage). They have a great support and they do almost everything you need (more space!). They have fast servers, no ads and low downtimes :D

I was wondering what this was about and glad I checked. I am about to cancel use of a big server that I no longer really use.. Only some Flight1 files are now used on it, as I have been hacked so many times on there.

I am about to go with Egnyte.com as they have some good prices, can set folders to private or public, can track who downloads files, so file downloads can be tracked via who downloaded what (so I know if files are hacked that are classified R&D).

$25.00 USD a month for the basic plan, direct linking available, 1GB file size (single files up to a Gig in size), 150 Gigs max on the base Office program.

I checked the others and most cannot do direct linking which I would need for wrapper packages (Fligh1 sales files). It would be nice to post photos from there also, but actually Flickr is awesome with photos management and linking. Great tools online for loading up files, and organizing them.

I tested out the demo of Egnyte.com and was impressed. Sent out private one-time click downloads, those worked fine. Notifies you when they occur. Has a great upload system 'in' the web explorer (Safari), cloud system, linkable files. I went ahead and purchased it, monthly, for managing my Flight1 files and R&D.
