• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

ADE extra objects

How do I get the added object libraries to show up in ADE? Example scenery folder for KEDW:
A10 library.bgl
C130 USA Library.bgl
dryden_x15_sr71_hl10_SC.BGL
F106 library.bgl
F111A Library US AUST.bgl
F15 USA Grey.bgl
HL-10.bgl
KC 135 Library.bgl
KEDW_ADE_PDS.BGL
KSFO_asbuilt_photo_v1.bgl
KSFO_asbuilt_v1.bgl
MAINBASE_AIRCRAFT_M_ADD.BGL
MDD_empty.bgl
MDD_empty_SCEN.BGL
RQ-4B.bgl
SOUTHBASE_CARS_ADD.BGL
SR-71.bgl
static_C-17.bgl
X-15.bgl

This only works for libraries that have .mdl files in them. I had to manualy decompile one library and add the sceney objects to the main airport .bgl for the objects to show up in ADE. I have run into this on several addon airports.

ADE will read any models from any bgl into the Library Object Manager. If the bgl file does not have any models then there is nothing to use. Some of the libraries you are trying to use may have geographical limitations as to where the objects in them can be used. This is a well documented issue and in that case the models do need to be extracted. If you are trying to use objects from KEDW at a distance from that airport then the most likely cause is geographical limitations. This applies to lots of objects in FSX designed for specific airports.

Thanks for the explaination. Its not just KEDW that I am dealing with. I had the problem with an KCOS airport. The library itself did not contain any .mdl files. an example is:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

<FSData

/>
</SceneryObject>

Finding these models is the problem. I inserted the scenery objects into the main airport bgl just to get ADE to show them. The main buildings did come with model files but many other buildings did not. How would I find these models? Do I need to search other airports to find them or are they in the default libraries? I will serach for more info on geographical limitations.

So I am not sure what you are trying to do. If you are trying to use objects that have geo restrictions outside that area then you will not be able to add them from the library and you will need to extract the models. What you show as XML is the placement code. Please confirm what you are looking for and why?

Some airports that I download come with extra object libraries that even after loading them in ADE they still will not show in ADE. I am wanting to use some of the buildings on other airports. Locating the models is going to be a big problem as they are not included with the libraries. When I do an airport I use default buildings as much as possible. Any other buildings or objects that I use I put in their own library, including the models and textures. I wish all airport designers would do the same. I will do alot more research on geographical limitations.

JimF117, your apparent desire to extract the scenery models from many airports and several other recent posts by others prompts me to once again crawl up on my "soapbox".

Just because you can extract a model from someone else's work, you do not have the right to use that model in your own work or to distribute it to others in any form - even as freeware.

You need to read the EULA (end-user license agreement) that comes with each airport. Indeed, the EULA of many airports available as freeware (including my own) prohibits reverse engineering, decompiling, etc. Simply by extracting the models from such airports you are violating the rights of the original developer. The developer spent significant effort creating those models and didn't put them in his/her airport for you to re-use.

But, even if decompilation is not prohibited, the EULA probably claims copyright. If you plan to use the work of others in your own airports, e.g., textures or buildings, even if you modify them, you need the permission of the original developer. Most developers include the permitted scope of use in their readmes/EULAs. Don't assume you have permission simply because there were no restrictions stated. You need express permission to breach someone's copyright. That being said, most developers of freeware are happy to have their work re-used provided they get credit.

I do always ask permission! I don't plan on using anything without asking first. Nearly all add on airports come with authors names and contact info and credits to model makers. I contact authors and creators before I use them. I understand and believe in the EULA system. I will also always give credit to the original author and to the model creators.

Jim, my post was not meant to be accusatory. Since you are a "believer", I'm sure you appreciate that many Flightsim hobbyists don't observe the terms of the EULAs for software they acquire. Indeed, many don't even recognize they should.

Given you are a recent visitor to this forum, your unqualified eagerness to extract models from the airport scenery of others and your apparent annoyance that not every airport developer makes it easy to extract their models and further, in light of certain recent posts on the topic by others, I thought a timely reminder was appropriate. It would now seem that reminder was unnecessary in your case.

No offense intended.

Hi,

When you are dealing with library objects, you will be working with TWO BGL files. The first one is the BGL file that contains the MDL object. These often have "library" in their file name, but not always. The second one is the BGL file that contains the placement information. That is the one that you posted the xml code above. This does not contain the MDL file, as you found out. You need to find the other BGL file that actually contains the MDL files. Keep in mind that if the author is using a generic library object, this other BGL file can be located anywhere in an active scenery folder. If a default library object, it will be somewhere in the main Scenery folder. If an addon library, it is often located in the Static Objects Library folder. If only for this airport, it will inside the airport's scenery folder.

No problem gadgets. While we are are this subject do you or anyone know how to reach Dan French. He has made several libraries and airports. Been trying to find out how to contact him. He does great work on his buildings and I want to get his permission to use them. I also have questions about the airports he has done. All of his airports say they are copywrited but do not give any contact info.
As for the default library objects being in any active scenery folder. I have found that many are not in the global scenery libraries. These are the ones that Scruffduck mentioned as geographical specific. So finding them will be really hard.

Re Dan French, I don't know how to contact him. Have you tried finding him in appropriate forums or by searching the Internet?

Don

Copied from readme file included with one of Dan's recently released airports.
Deleted email because posting it was a bad idea.

Thanks for his email address. To let you guys know I did a search on Avsim.net for just ggse and found the library that was converted for FSX. It also came with all the descriptions and thumbnails.

could the mods remove that email address as I'm sure
Dan doesn't want to be plagued with spam
